Fin da subito ad Annabel la figlia Georgie appare "strana": non guarda negli occhi la madre, nemmeno durante i primi istanti di vita. Con il passare del tempo, la "stranezza" di Georgie si accentua e Annabel si rende conto che la bambina vive in un mondo a parte, dove non è ammessa alcuna creatura vivente. In quegli anni (fine anni Sessanta) l'autismo è ancora poco conosciuto e questa ignoranza si ripercuote su Annabel, che viene tacitamente incolpata di "soffocare" la figlia, di non lasciarla crescere.
