Guazzo's letter collection, the first of its kind to be arranged according to various categories, was first printed by Barezzi at Venice in 1590 and literally reprinted at Turin in 1591 (cf. L. Braida, p. 251). A second augmented edition appeared in 1592 (Venice, Barezzi). In the present edition the dedication to Vincenzo Gonzaga dated from Casale, October 1, 1590 has been preserved as well as Guazzo's preface. In a letter to Barezzo Barezzi (Pavia, June 24, 1591, pp. 467-468) he announced to the latter that he is sending him seventy-six additional letters. This third edition of 1596 (433 letters) is essentially a reprint of the 1592 edition. A fourth Barezzi edition with the text reset appeared in 1599, which was followed by reprints in 1603, 1606, and 1614.?Compiuta l'antologia conforme all' ?ufficio di segretario', il Guazzo torna venticinque anni dopo, a ordinare le proprie lettere in un volume progettato a disegno della ?forma del ben scrivere' e dell' ?ornato ragionar per lettera' [.] riunisce, ormai sulla soglia dei sessant'anni, un libro di circa quattrocento lettere [.] con un preliminare avviso al lettore, vero e proprio manifesto di poetica in cui il Guazzo, di fronte alle ?tante lettere scritte dal Bembo, dal Tolomei, dal Tasso, dal Contile', non sapendo se definire le proprie ?famigliari o volgari', confessa il suo ?premeditato disegno' di raccolta per la stampa e ribadisce la sua ?idea nello scrivere delle lettere [.] io giudicai sempre doversi serbare un tal mezo tra la natura e l'arte, ché le cose che si scrivono non siano né forbite né rugginose'. Il classico giusto mezzo, l'aurea mediocritas, che rifugge sia l'eccesso ?di figure poetiche, di sentenze filosofiche, d'ornamenti retorici', sia il ?tanto sprezzamento delle parole' e la ?tanta trascuraggine dei concetti' s'impone a regola primaria ?universalissima' della scrittura epistolare: ?le lettere s'hanno a scrivere con un certo né troppo né poco di famigliarità, onde mostrino una nobile rustichezza, un adorna trascuraggine, un riverendo disprezzo e una studiosa familiarità'. I ?confini' della lettera vengono così ricondotti alla norma della ?sprezzatura', in una totalità che assorbe ogni aspetto del ?vivere a corte' come della ?forma del ben scrivere'. Dall'antologia al proprio ?libro d'autore' il Guazzo compie un iter di raccolta nel segno doppio della dilatazione e della contrazione. Nelle sue Lettere si dilata il numero dei destinatari, esteso dai gentiluomini monferrini (in gran parte ricomparsi) a principi, segretari, diplomatici, cardinali, vescovi, e letterati di spicco sulla scena italiana, quali Antonio Beffa Negrini, Giovan Pietro Besozzo, Angelo Ingegneri, Francesco Panigarola, Felice Passero, Alessandro Tesauro, Maffeo Venier. Si dilata anche l'arco del tempo (dal 1559 all'ottobre 1590). Si contrae, invece, il movimento dei luoghi di scrittura, in una geografia ristretta all'Italia e alla solo Parigi, con accentuatissima presenza di pochi luoghi emblematici: Casale, Olivola, Pavia, Mantova. Si contrae, se pur lievemente, la stessa rosa dei ?capi', con l'incremento fortissimo della nuova categoria di ?complimenti misti' che arriva ad occupare più della metà del volume? (M.L.
