Full contemporary marbled calf, rebacked. boards ruled and tooled in gilt. Spines with red and black morocco spine labels, lettered in gilt. Spines stamped in gilt. Drab green endpapers. Gilt dentelles. Gilt board edges. All edges marbled. Boards with some rubbing and corners a bit bumped. In volume I, C5 with a closed tear, repaired not affecting text. Leaves Y-Y3 with neat repairs to top margins, just barley touching headline. Leaf Y4 with closed tear to bottom margin, neatly repaired and just touching a few letters. In volume II, leaf Qq3 with a closed tear neatly repaired at bottom margin, not affecting text. Some general toning and light staining, but overall very good with beautiful hand-colored plates. ?Stedman, an officer in the Scots Brigade in Holland, volunteered for service against the negroes in Dutch Guiana. While out there he to all intents married the subject of Number 9 [facing p. 95], Joanna, a Mulatto, and had a son by her, who became a midshipman in the British Navy, but died young. The author emerges as a most interesting and sympathetic character. As Lowndes rightly says the book is as entertaining as a romance. It will be noticed that William Blake engraved thirteen plates, while three plates were engraved by Bartolozzi? "Many of the plates, it will be noticed, were engraved by [William] Blake, who had learnt his trade from Basire, to whom he was apprenticed for seven years from August 1772. As Keynes says in his bibliography From 1791 until 1800 Blake did much of his work as a journeyman engraver for the booksellers" (Abbey). Keynes eventually decided that Blake was responsible for sixteen of the plates. "Both text and plates made a strong impression on reviewers. Large quarto (27 cm) in full polished calf, five raised bands, gilt titles to spine, emblem in gilt of Society of Writers to the Signet (and from that library) on front covers.… Illustrated with fine copperplate engravings by William Blake, Bartolozzi, Benedetti, Perry, Barlow, Conder, Smith, and Holloway (Quite a few plates, especially the half-page plates, are unattributed. In some instances, the engraver's name must be made out with a magnifying glass) and three maps. Seventy-nine of the original eighty plates are present showing individuals, encampments, views of settlements, monkeys, jaguar, small animals, birds, butterflies, fish; many botanical plates including, e.g., coffee plant, indigo, palms, various tropical fruits. Absent plate 80 ('Europe supported by Africa and America'); map of Guiana appears to have lost about half at a fold; three lines of text missing at bottom of Volume I, pages 165- 166. Title pages heavily spotted with only light intermittent spotting elsewhere, but plates and text are generally clean. Later 19th century leather binding, skilfully re-backed, new endpapers. John Gabriel Stedman (1744- 1797), a professional soldier who served during the slave revolt in Surinam and Guiana, depicted the cruelty of the planters and described the animals and flora of an exotic region of South America. The book became a reference point for supporters of abolition, including Stedman's friend, William Blake, whose engravings appear in this book by the 'radical' publishers Johnson and Edwards. Johnson, Stedman's book has been of vital importance as it is "one of the most detailed descriptions ever written of an eighteenth-century slave plantation society" (ODNB). His "intimate dealings with members of all social classes, from the governor and the wealthiest planters to the most oppressed slaves and maroon rebels, gave him unique opportunities to describe the full panorama of colonial life-the mistreatment of slaves by sadistic masters, the courage of the rebels in battle, the daily lives of Indian and African slaves, and exotic flora and fauna" (ibid). These insights into the harsh reality of the slave trade lead the book to be regarded as an important tool for early abolitionist causes. Interestingly, however, it is now known that this first edition "in fact represented a significantly altered version of the manuscript Stedman had submitted to his publisher, Joseph Johnson, in 1790. For unbeknown to the author, Johnson had passed the manuscript to William Thomson, a professional editor and ghost writer" (ibid) who was hired to rewrite the original manuscript entirely. Upon seeing this heavily edited version, Stedman commented that it was "mard intirely" and "full of lies and nonsense" (Stedman's diary, 24 June, 1975). It is claimed that Stedman exploded in anger and burned two thousand copies. This first edition "distorted Stedman's views on race, slavery, and social justice, and turned them more towards a pro-slavery position" (ibid). His view on slavery is, however, a complicated one and has been subject to much scholarly debate. Despite the highly sympathetic sections withheld from the 1796 first edition such as "his admiration for Africans-their institutions, morals, hygiene-including the rebel slaves; his frank depiction of sex between European men and African women; and many of his remarks about the pervasiveness of misconduct and debauchery of European planters" (ibid), Stedman himself was far from an abolitionist. For instance, in 1792 Stedman refused to sign a popular petition against the slave trade. Stedman seemed to concede that Britain's tropical colonies could not be cultivated and maintained without slave labour, being content in the end to propose modest political and legal reformations to the slave trade. Stedman's love affair with the Joanna, an enslaved mulatto woman with whom he had a son, further complicates his views towards slavery. Nevertheless, Stedman's account of his time spent in Surinam "had significant contemporary impact. Upon its publication the Critical Review observed that "we have never opened any work which is so admirably calculated to excite the most heart-felt abhorrence and detestation of that grossest assault on human nature-domestic slavery." Stedman's wonderfully illustrative account of the reality of eighteenth-century slave plantations has been brought to life in this volume by plates illustrated by William Blake, Francesco Bartolozzi, and others based on Stedman's original drawings and watercolours.
