Paperback. Zustand: Fair. 79 p. 23 cm. Tan paper cover. Rear cover and much of spine missing, some wear and ink stamp for Maryland Historical Society to front. Occasional foxing. Small tears in last page. The Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America, or American Colonization Society (ACS) supported the migration of free African Americans to Africa, helping to found a colony in West Africa. The group was a coalition made up mostly of evangelicals, Quakers, abolitionists, and some slaveholders. The latter saw repatriation as a way to remove free blacks who might assist in slave rebellions. Many blacks perceived this as a racist strategy to purge the US of black citizens and preferred to fight for equal rights at home. Presidents Jefferson, Monroe and Madison, however, were among the organization's supporters. The migration led to the founding of Liberia which became an independent state in 1847. This booklet advocates a line of steamers between the US and Africa, designed to promote the colonization of African Americans, to suppress the African slave trade, to carry mail, and extend the commerce of the US. Pages 31 onwards are an appendix added by the ACS. P. 77 states Henry Clay has been elected president of ACS in 1850 and lists 66 vice presidents including Daniel Webster of Massachusetts.
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. The Chartmakers Inc. (illustrator). Second Edition. 39 pages. Dedicated to man's age-old effort to create a government strong enough to protect him without creating a force strong enough to enslave him. "Most of the mystery surrounding what we call money results from the illusion that money, in itself, is something: in reality money, in itself, is nothing. If the reader of this book will open his/her mind to this apparently paradoxical truth, he will more easily understand the true nature and function of money. Written for the millions of citizens whose lives are directly and seriously affected by money, but who have never had access to a simple analysis from which they could gain a working knowledge of the subject. We wish to point out, however, that this book merely dissects and examines: it expresses no opinions. Any quarrel with this book is not a quarrel with the authors: it is a quarrel with the facts of our economic life." - from Preface. Average wear. Contents unmarked. Beige covers soiled with unsightly stain at top of front board. Binding intact. Good working copy.
