In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. Large folio. Bound in full leather. Front cover detached but present. 2 blank pages added later. The original first blank page has been made into a handwritten title page "The History of the Philosophy" complete with printers name and date. The next page is a title page ,"The History of Chaldaick Philos…ophy." Handwritten note at the bottom of the page says, "London, Printed 1687." Stanley's History of Philosophy was published in 1655 (volume 1), 1656 (volume 2), 1660 (volume 3) and 1662 (volume 4). Then, in 1687, they were issued together in a single volume. It went through several editions and was a popular and trusted philosophical reference for a generation of thinkers. This copy was owned by the Rev. Samuel Moody. His name is written in the book three times twice on page 587 and again at the top of the table of contents page at the end. His wife's name, Hannah Moody, is signed at the bottom of page 521. Samuel Moody was born around 1675, probably in Portsmouth. The first firm date in his biography is his graduation from Harvard in 1697. Not long after that he settled in York (in what is now Maine). He married Hannah Sewell. Their first son, Joseph Moody, was born in 1700. They lived in York for the rest of their lives. Hannah died in 1728. Samuel died in 1747. Moody published several of his sermons, including the famous "Doleful State of the Damned" in 1710. The Moody family is well documented in Charles Moody's 1847 "Biographical Sketched of the Moody Family." Before Moody's arrival in York, its first minister was killed (in 1692) during a particularly violent Indian attack on York, known as the Candlemas Massacre. Houses were burned, hostages were taken, and Ref. Drummer was murdered. Samuel Moody took his place in the largely-rebuilt village just a couple years later. At the end of his life, Rev. Moody served as the Chaplain in the final serious action of the 50 year long war with the French & Indians, the attack on Lousisbourg (in what is now Nova Scotia) in 1745. His son, Joseph Moody achieved lasting fame for his eccentric preference for appearing in public rarely & then always with a black handkerchief covering his face. Nathanial Hawthorne's 1836 story, "The Minister's Black Veil," is based on the Rev. Joseph Moody. The history of this book as an historical object is wonderful to consider. Printed in London, shipped across the ocean some time between 1687 and 1747 we might even narrow it to 1728 at the late end, because Hannah Moody's name appears in it. It survived in the relative wilderness of coastal Maine, amid droughts and Indian attacks, winter storms and every other hardship. (All before Thomas Jefferson was able to crawl) There are only a handful of Colonists from this generation whose names have come down to us, fewer still for whom entire, detailed biographies exist. Samuel Moody is one of those few. There are no other known copies of books from his library. The pagination is a bit of a puzzle but not an unsolvable one explained below. Title page is numbered in pencil '979.' Dedication is numbered in pencil '975.' The next page is "The History of the Chaldaick Philosophy: The First Book of the Chaldaeans," but the page is numbered (in print) 1029 & the header says 'Part XIV.' Pagination continues from 1029-1082 in the proper order. The next page has a full page engraving of Thales, and the header "The History of Philosophy: The First Part," and the pagination starts at 1 and continues to 228, then 353-445, then 452-587, then 737-960. (These jumps in pagination do not have anything to do with break in text, except for that page 352/352 in missing. Apart from that single page, the leap in numbers is consistent in every copy I have been able to research.) After page 960 comes the topographical table, which is not numbered. Pencil notations of page numbers have been added here, starting at 961 and continuing to 972. Then follows at page with the header "The Table: Fourth Part" which is.
