A scarce illuminated book in the original binding. The date of publication is obtained from; McLean, R. Victorian book design. 5.5" x 4.2" x 0.7" . Maroon cloth over bevelled board, corners a little bumped. Both boards and spine, decorated with elaborate gilt decoration (now dulled). Spine dulled and rubbed. Some leaves proud of the text block, but all firmly attached. Original green endpapers. Inner hinges carefully strengthened. Small binder's label to recto of rear board: "Bound by W. Bone & Son, 76 Fleet St. E.C." 16 illuminated leaves (including frontis and title). Frontis has a sepia photo of Shakespeare. Colophon to verso of title: "Illuminated by Saml. Stanesby. Red Cloth. Zustand: Minor Cover Wear. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. All edges gilt. Bevelled boards. Panelled covers with imitation clasps in gilt. Covers and spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Spine extremitiesd and corners show modest wear.Small scuff near bottom front cover. Undated by circa 1863. Elaborate floriated title-page. Thgis is a so-called "perfect binding" which is a glued binding rather than stitched. Some evidence of the glue in both gutters whgich is common in these bindings. Twenty-eight full-page plates on heavy card stock, each with a central poem with a chromolithographic border, each a different floarl motif. The plates are protected by tissue-guards. Undated, dated from a copy held at The British Library. Scarce. The first and only edition of the work, particularly scarce in this green variant cloth.Recased, although binding is beginning to fail with the occasional leaf detached but present. This is a fragile binding and is usually seen recased. The leaves have been incorrectly bound in the work, meaning the page numbers do not run sequentially. However, as each leaf is its own poem, the work can still be read and enjoyed. Collated complete.Each leaf contains vibrant chromolithograph marginal motifs, thematically linked to the included flower.This finely crafted book is a charming collection of short poetic extracts, all centred on flowers, and includes passages from Wordsworth and Shakespeare, amongst others. The work is a particularly ornate example of Victorian gift books, created for their beauty. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Recased, with leaves incorrectly bound out of sequence. Bumping to extremities and the odd handling mark to the boards. Prior owners' ink inscriptions to front free endpaper and paste down.
