This paper describes a laser-driven MiniFlyer system used at Los Alamos National Laboratory for small-scale shock physics research. The system consists of a single shot Nd:glass driving laser; beam shaping optics; a sample holder, containing the flyer plate assembly and target material; and diagnostic equipment such as velocity interferometers. The beam from the driving laser, when incident on the flyer plate assembly, generates plasma that launches a small thin flyer plate ( 3 mm in diameter by 0.05 to 0.10 mm thick) at velocities up to 1 mm/us. This flyer plate impacts a target material, producing a shock wave. Various dynamic material properties, such as spall strength, can be determined from these experiments. The laser driving system is described in detail, along with several types of diagnostics used to determine the nature of the experiments and to measure the shock parameters. In addition, experiments are described to provide information about the type of research that can be done with this system. Data from these experiments are shown to add important new information concerning the dynamic spall behavior of copper. The experimental layout addressed drive laser characteristics, substrate window coating, flyer plates, target description, sample holders, VISAR setup, Line ORVIS, and a Stereoscopic Camera system. Representative measurements included General Flyer Velocity versus Driving-Laser Energy, Copper Spall Measurements, Uranium Spall Measurements, Stereo Measurement, and Hugoniot Measurement with the ORVIS. Modeling of the Laser/Substrate/Coatings/Flyer interaction was addressed followed by a discussion of conclusion and future work.…

Jahrh. neben Boerhaave und Hoffmann, studierte gleichzeitig mit Hoffmann in Jena, besonders unter Wedel und promovirte 1684. Er habilitirte sich daselbst und erwarb sich bald einen solchen Ruf, dass er 1687 zum Hofmedicus des Herzogs von Weimar ernannt wurde. Auf Veranlassung wurde er 1694 an die neu gegründete Universität zu Halle als zweiter Prof. der Med. berufen. Er folgte diesem Rufe und beide waren dort lange Zeit die einzigen Dozenten der Medicin, die sich die Vorlesungen in der Weise theilten, dass Stahl über Botanik, Physiologie, Pathologie, Diätetik, Arzneimittellehre und med. Institutionen (Encyclopädie) las, während alle übrigen Vorlesungen Hoffmann übernahm. Nach 22jährige Tätigkeit und wenige Jahre, nachdem Letzterer aus Berlin von seinem vorübergehenden Aufenthalte wieder nach Halle zurückgekehrt war, im Jahre 1716, ging Stahl als Leibarzt des Königs von Preussen nach Berlin und wirkte hier bis zu seinem 14.Mai 1734 erfolgten Tode. (.)So wenig man auch (heute) die von Stahl aufgestellten Theorie billigen kann, so muss man doch gestehen, dass er die bedeutendsten Einblicke in die pathol. Verhältnisse gethan hat und dass zahlreiche seiner Ansichten durch die späteren Erfahrungen bestätigt worden sind. Er sieht aber die Einheitlichkeit des Organismus in der Seele repräsentirt. Das Leben besteht aussschliesslich auf der normalen Zusammensetzung der einzelnen Theile des Körpers; die Anima schützt aber den Körper vor dem Zerfall. Der Tod erfolgt, weil mit der Trennung der Seele von dem Körper das in diesem enthaltene Prinzip schwindet. Stahl bekämpft jede naturwissenschaftliche Behandlung der Medizin; Anatomie und Physiologie erklärt er für überflüssigen Ballast der Medizin. Das von ihm aufgestellte Princip des "Animismus" verfolgt er nun bis in die äussersten Consequenzen.(.)In therapeutischer Beziehung sucht er vor allem die Ausleerungen zu fördern.(.)Nicht unerwähnt darf zum Schlusse noch bleiben, das Stahl auch in der Chemie eine besdeutende Rolle gespielt hat.
