Zustand: Fine. - Over 190 words typed on 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide his personalized ("E.G.R.") watermarked letterhead. Replying to Menasha Katz' letter, Edward G. Robinson thanks him and responds that "It may be a long interval since you have received any news from me. Nevertheless, I have often thought of the many pleasant meetings we have enjoyed and my visit to the naval academy in Annapolis under your your tutelage has remained vividly in my mind." He goes on to comment that "As long as your enthusiasm continues, you will be the 'young man' I always knew." He concludes hoping that "we will soon catch up while we are still on our four feet--two for you and two for me." Signed in full "Edward G. Robinson". Folded for mailing with staple holes at top left. Else, fine. Born in Romania, the well-known American stage & screen actor Edward G. Robinson (1893-1973) is best known for his tough guy gangster roles in such films as "Little Caesar" and "Key Largo". An outspoken critic of Fascism and Nazism in the years leading up to the war, his activism and contributions to war relief funds and cultural and educational groups brought him to the attention of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Though cleared, he was gray-listed by Hollywood and, for a while, could only find work at minor film studios. Also born in Romania, Menasha E. Katz (1900-1980) emigrated to Baltimore as a child. He served in the army and subsequently joined the Maryland State Police Department. A marksman, he was part of the United States Pistol team competing in the 1953 World Maccabiah Games in Israel. In his role as a Maryland State Police Officer, Katz served as protection and sometimes aide to visiting dignitaries such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Kennedy, Mae West, Edward G. Robinson, several U.S. Presidents, and the Queen of England. Baltimore Sun Columnist Michael Olesker writes that when Queen Elizabeth visited Maryland, Katz first kissed her hand and then, taking a British Bobbie's joking comment that the Queen likes to be "kissed on the face" as truth, did so. Olesker writes that while serving as Mae West's police chauffeur by day, on her visit for a charity auction, Katz also stayed with her at the Belvedere Hotel, quoting Katz as saying "'Only, you don't have to tell anybody I slept with her.' He considered that for a moment, and added, 'Tell 'em she slept with me.'" Following Al Capone's release from Alcatraz for medical treatment at Baltimore's Union Memorial Hospital, Katz served as his Police protection. Capone stayed with him at his home for 4 months along with 2 of his bodyguards. Olesker quotes Katz as saying "You know, guys like that, they'd come out of Alcatraz and they'd get killed. Me Scared? No, not a guy like me.".
