Published in Shrewsbury Shropshire in 1867, this is the First Edition of this work on Shropshire Castles and fortified Manor Houses in Shropshire during the English Civil War, bound in an old quarter leather binding titled in gilt to the spine, internally well illustrated with many drawings throughout, 11.5 inches tall, 89pp, there is edge rubbing wear and some mild scratches to the boards, else binding is in good solid condition, internally noticeable heavy foxing to opening few pages else in good condition.…

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. First edition. The signed first edition and a presentation copy of a tour of the Welsh castle, written by a prominent local arcaheologist. The first edition and a signed presentation copy of The Castle of Thirteen Views of the Castle of St. Donat's, Glamorganshire, written by British arcaheologist, botanist, and non-fiction writer Frances Stackhouse Acton, With a Notice of the Stradling Family by George Thomas Clarke. In the publisher's original cloth, bound by Adnitt & Naunton booksellers in Shrewsbury. Contains a frontispiece, and contains all thirteen beautifully illustrated ink plates. Collated complete. Presentation bookplate to the Shropshire Club signed by Acton, with verso of the front free end paper containing a signed inscription by Acton. Acton offers readers a tour of the very well-preserved Welsh medieval castle, claimed to be more militaristic compared to similar castles in the surrounding area of Glamorganshire. To the rear, Clarke offers notes on the Stradling Family, who owned the castle following the Norman conquest. Acton was a notable intellectual in the Shropshire area, both excavating a Roman villa at Acton Scott Hall, and wrote extensively on archaeology in Shropshire. In the publisher's original cloth. Externally, mostly smart, with the odd faint mark to boards. Slight rubbing to joints and edges, with bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with small lifts to cloth. A couple of minor punctures, to spine and rear joint. Grey end papers are mostly clean, with slight browning and smudging to signed presentation bookplate extremities. Binding stamp to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with minor age toning, and the odd small spot to the extremities of the occasional leaf. Very Good.
