Spine has rubbing wear and chipping throughout. Boards have splitting to joints but are still attached by sewing guides, bumping to fore corners, shelfwear to edges, and rubbing and scuffing throughout; front board has a small strip of leather peeled away near lower fore edge; rear board has a shallow impact mark to bottom edge with scattered staining adjacent. Text block has speckled edges; dust soiling and scuffing to edges; heavy adhesive toning to edges of endpapers and margins of leaves adjacent, splitting to hinges, and light foxing and age-toning throughout. Text in French. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. This book was originally a blank notebook with ruled borders around the margins of pages to create a block to be written in. The original owner, a parish priest at the Église Saint-Jean known only by his initials, left the first three-fifths of the book without notes, only writing in the space after the plate depicting a neoclassically-styled building. His church still exists today under the name Temple de Serrières and is an active Protestant parish church located in the historic Serrières quarter of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The preface explains that in late 1765, the author prepared a group of young catechumens for their first communion. Seeing their zeal, he proposed meeting every Saturday evening at the Church of St. Jean (à l'Église de St. Jean) for a shared service of prayer. Following the preface is the order of service he wrote for these Saturday-ly prayers, which he says are chiefly based on the Reformed Neuchâtel Liturgy of Jean-Frédéric Ostervald, adapted and augmented with elements borrowed from the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer. 1416818.
