Elegantly printed "Every good wish for Christmas / and the New Year from" at center and at lower left Donegall's London address. After "from" he writes in black ink "Don," adding below: "Thank you again, dear Beth, for / all your kindness and hospitality / throughout 1953. The older one gets the / more one appreciates real friends. / Don." Recipient "Beth" was likely the name of a nursemaid who assisted Prince Andrew's childhood nanny, Mabel Anderson. Interestingly, 1953 was the year that Donegall divorced his first wife Gladys Jean after ten years of non-bliss, leading one to conclude from his heartfelt message that Beth consoled him during a difficult year. Quite intriguing.…

This popular British journalist was a member of the British peerage -- but was often heard to say "Call me Don!" He married his second wife, the former Mrs. Douglas McKenzie, in 1968. Christmas card, heavy stock 6" X 8", London, n.y. [ca. 1970]. Fine. Front panel is a color photograph captioned "The Speech from the Throne" shows Queen Elizabeth II in regal attire which caption on verso describes as "The Queen reading the Speech from the Throne at the Opening of the second session of the forty-second Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on 1st November, 1960. This was the first occasion when the Opening of Parliament was televised." Right inner panel is partly printed and features the "House of Lords" insignia in red at the top. The Marquess writes "For Beth" at upper left in red fineline. Below the crest in black is the printed message, "Best wishes for Christmas / and the New Year / from" -- and below this the Marquess writes "With Affection / Don" and below this his wife adds "and Maureen." The London address of "Lord Donegall's Office" is printed in black at lower left. Recipient "Beth" was likely the name of a nursemaid who assisted Prince Andrew's childhood nanny, Mabel Anderson. A nice piece of ephemera, associated with a landmark concert in the history of British popular music. 1p, 8vo. Twenty-three-line typed circular, with perforated order slip for tickets at end. In fair condition, lightly aged. Signed 'Donegall' and with autograph address to 'Dear Mac Queen Pope' (i.e. the theatre historian W. P. MacQueen Pope). The circular begins: 'I am writing to you because H. R. H. Princess Elizabeth has graciously consented to attend the Concert to be held by the National Federation of Jazz Organizations, of which I am President, at the Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, on Saturday evening, July 14th. / This Concert would have been in any case a great landmark in British Jazz because it is no small honour to this type of Folk Music to be granted the use of the Royal Festival Hall. But it becomes historical due to Her Royal Highness's intended presence - it is in fact to the best of my knowledge the first time that Royalty has publicly recognised this musical idiom.' He offers boxes to the event 'On behalf of my Kent Army Cadet Force Welfare' (on the letterhead Donegall is listed as one of four members of the 'Welfare Committee'). He concludes: 'Such has been the nation-wide interest in the revival of genuine Jazz Music that I am sure you will not want to miss this unique and royally honoured presentation of the best that Britain has to contribute in this branch of Music.'. …
