In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. 5th or later Edition. The twelfth edition of this sought-after account of Pitcairn and island life - a lovely well-preserved copy in the original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt tiles and decorations. The twelfth edition is revised with a new preface, bringing the te…xt up to date, and has four leaves of advertisements at the back of the book. An exciting account of the island of Pitcairn, with details on island life and descriptions of the scenery. With chapters on the bounty, the murder of John Norton, accounts of the mutiny, and much more. including a historical sketch of Norfolk Island and its condition in the nineteenth century. The first edition originally appeared in 1853. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and seventeen further full page engraved plates, one of which is a fold-out facsimile of John Adam's handwriting. Collated, complete. An excellent copy of this sought after travel work. ***For a book now 165 years old, this copy can be described as near fine, with very few discernible faults. Blind-decorated green cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright, considering the book's age. The top edge of the page block is also gilt and still clean and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. No significant bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with clean pages - hardly any foxing and no creases or tears - just a couple of top corner tips turned. There is a contemporaneous presentation inscription, dated 1862, in fountain-pen on the yellow front free endpaper (please see scans). ***168mm x 112mm. 414 pages plus 4pp of adverts at the back of the book. ***'The first Edition of "Pitcairn; the Island, the People, and the Pastor.", appeared in the spring of 1853. Between that date and the present, about thirty thousand copies have been printed. The subject was one of a kind at once to command a large circulation of the work: and circumstances have continued to arise, in connexion with the Island, which have greatly tended to sustain the interest felt in the place and its inhabitants. The arrival of their pastor in England, his admission, whilst here, to holy orders, and his interview with the Queen and the Prince Consort, were pleasing and important occurrences, when viewed in reference to the original history of Pitcairn. Still more eventful days, however, were in store for the people. The provision made by the British Government for their transfer to Norfolk Island, and the further measures recently adopted for their benefit by Sir William Denison, the governor, have brought to our minds the progress and prospects of this remarkable community in a striking manner.' (Quote taken from the new Preface to the twelfth edition) ***'x.' (Quote taken from Wiki) ***A revised and enlarged twelfth edition of this beautiful little book, in near fine original condition. Very uncommon in this condition. Of interest to collectors of work concerning Pitcairn Island. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
