In den WarenkorbBroadside, 510 x 335 mm. a little spotted, with old creases. Edward Allen, a persistent dealer in forged bank notes was executed on Washwood Heath, Birmingham, on 19th April 1802, protesting his innocence to the last and accusing William Spurrier of his murder. Spurrier, acting as agent for the Bank of England, employed two men to purchase forged notes from Allen, which they duly did and testified against him, firstly before the Magistrate, Mr Hicks, who here confirms the evidence, and later at trial where Allen was found guilty and sentenced to be hanged. Spurrier here lays out the facts of the case with Allen's futile protestation of innocence. Between 1777 and 1829 over 200 individuals were hanged for "capital forgery," the deterrent intended to protect paper currency; forgery was deemed a "peculiarly subversive threat" to the growing commercial economy and the reliability of the Bank of England's paper money. Allen had long been suspected of being a fabricator of notes and had been implicated by John Atkinson, hanged at Nottingham in 1800, as well as "Confession of other unfortunate Persons, who, by Means of Notes purchased from Allen, had forfeited their Lives." Here the notes purchased from Allen were ". of the new Sort, with waving lines. They were the first of the Kind which I had seen." Seemingly unrecorded.
