Bereits während seines Stud. arbeitete er zunächst als Volontär (1874) und als Ass. von Salomon Stricker (ab 1875) am Inst. für allg. und experimentelle Pathol. 1883 wurde S. zum o. Prof. der allg. und experimentellen Pathol. an der neu errichteten med. Fak. der Tschech. Univ. Prag und zum Vorstand des Inst. für allg. und experimentelle Pathol. an derselben Univ. ernannt, wobei er vorübergehend auch am Lehrstuhl für Physiol. und Histol. suppl.; 1887/88, 1896/97 und 1901/02 Dekan der med. Fak., 1894/95 Rektor der Tschech. Univ. Prag. S. machte sich um die Errichtung des Patholog. Inst. verdient. Seine Abhh., meistens in Fachz. veröff., befaßten sich mit zahlreichen Aspekten der Histol., der normalen sowie patholog. Physiol., der Experimentalpathol. und Bakteriol. Von seinen Experimentalarbeiten sind insbes. die Publ. über Farbstoffversuche bei der Diagnostik hervorzuheben, aber auch seine Werke über innere Sekretion, Resorption und innere Atmung in Organen. Unabhängig von Charles Alexander MacMunn entdeckte er Zytochrome, in bakteriolog. Fragen der Tuberkulose polemisierte er gegen Robert Koch. S. veröff. auch Stud. über Pharmakol. und Toxikol. (z. B. biolog. Morphinnachweis). 1890 wurde er Mitgl. der Tschech. Akad. für Wiss. und Kunst, weiters war er Mitgl. des Landes-Gesundheitsrats für Böhmen und erhielt den Titel HR verliehen.
