Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Limited Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, limited edition of 900 copies of which this is number 283. Light brown paper and cloth covered boards with text on spine. Exterior shows spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. The rear board shows some light spots where the paper is worn down, this issue is limited to the hinge edge and corners. The internal binding is good in text pages are tight. It does not appear this book was ever read as there are many quadrants of paper still uncut, both at the top and the outside edge. Although the book was never read there is a stain that can be seen on the exterior top edge in this mark bleeds down a bit onto the pages and spots - maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch in general. No signature bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting. The reason for the low condition grade is solely because of the exterior look.

Printed on thick creamy Dutch Rag paper with wide margins in Bodoni Type. Internally very good clean tight sound square, attractive scrolled armorial bookplate of John Richard Sofio to pastedown, with ownership inscription of J. Stuart Williams upon, browning limited to free endpapers not intruding or detracting, edges of leaves attractively untrimmed. Bound in original full wide weave brown cloth, with bright gilt text on red calf leather label. Abraham Cowley was a leading poet of the 17th century, indeed Milton held that Cowley, Spenser and Shakespeare were the three best English poets. Nonesuch Press, publishers of the volume in hand, were unusual amongst private press, in that it used a small Albion Hand Press to exquisitely design and produce books which were then commercially printed, since the owner Francis Meynell wanted to demonstrate that Mechanical means could be made to serve fine ends.
