Binding is original from the period. Title and author appear lettered in gold in second compartment of spine, other boxes bear lovely ornamental gilt stamping, with the date, 1660, at the bottom. All edges text block red. Marbled endpapers. Sextodecimo (6 7/8 x 4 11/16 inches; 174 x 118 millimeters). 644 pages. Condition: Very Good. Leather has rubbed at corners, along edges, and at the front hinge. Lowest hub of spine flattened. General wear. Pages are toned, small stains throughout. Some foxing. Page 225-226 is missing the very edge of the margin- no text is affected. Occasional script from prior owners, all in hand superior to that of modern times. Front blank has petite inscription to a mother from her son. Front paste-down endpaper bears bookplate for Genevieve Ludlow Griscom (pseudonym Cavé), New York Theosophist whom built a mansion in the Bronx for Christ upon his return.

London, William Battersby, 1700. 8vo. In contemporary full sprinkled calf with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Boards with ruled fillets. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light wear to extremities, boards slightly soilied and miscoloured. Leather on spine cracked. First few leaves with dampstains, otherwise internally generally nice and clean. (40), 582 pp. + 26 (out of 38) plates. Eighth edition of Spark?s most popular and influtial work being a series of disquisitions or meditations on the principal feasts, together with original religious poetry in each section and extensive prayers for each feast. The engraved illustrations derived from engravings by Collaert after Marten de Vos. Despite its popularity and numerous edition and reprints, all editions are scarce and are rarely found in the trade.
