Shanghai, 1923-1933, North-China Herald. Green cloth, very good, 20 volumes=10 year run complete, with indexes, profuse b.w. & color [some tipped in] illustrations, drawings, maps, English text, clean, solid, 17 x 25 cm. FIRST & ONLY EDITION . *** **** *** . . A CONTIGIOUS, STRAIGHT & COMPLETE RUN FROM . . . VOLUME 1, #1 THROUGH VOLUME 19, DECEMBER 1933 . . . WITH FRONT & BACK COVERS BOUND, COMPLETE AS ISSUED . . . FIRST AND ONLY ORIGINAL EDITION . * This work is legendary, and comprehensive, collecting articles from the leading scholars, authorities, exponents of the time, most of whom were residents of China, both Chinese and foreign. The coverage is eclectic, and truly address virtually "everything Chinese" without reservation. From art, literature, science, botany, zoology, travel, exploration, ethnic studies. Co-author John C. Ferguson. . * INCEPTION, GOALS, CONTRIBUTORS AND READERS: It was edited by Arthur De Carles Sowerby [science] and John C. Ferguson [literature & arts]. The journal was supported by a host of enthusiastic scientists, Sinologue's, art lovers, antiquarians, educationalists, and others who just wanted to see it thrive ! In volume 1, pages 1-3 is a discussion of the "Inception and Aims." As for esoteric "science" the goal was for "less heavy in nature" an escape from the "dry" kind of science, a type of science that can be enjoyed by the casual reader, within the intelligence of the ordinary man or woman. "A high class journal dealing with matters mainly of intellectual interest." It is just that ! The public was encouraged to join the China Society of Science and Arts. . *** CONTENTS: One is hard-put to find a subject NOT represented. The journal was a kind of democratic form and expression outlet for all writers, scholars, collectors and interested persons who had a desire to write something of value. Simply reading the index gives one an encyclopedic coverage of "all things Chinese" as well as adjacent areas: Mongolia, Manchuria, Everest, and the like. If it related to the continent of Asia and China it fit in. . * Such memorable ones as Plague Laboratory in Harbin notes, to bound girl's feet, Mongolia, Chinese porcelain, opening of the Shanghai Museum, gardens, fresh-water fishing near Shanghai, Shantung Coleopterans, chrysanthemums, educational notes, sing-song girls, ancient jade, mammals, shooting & hunting, sports, making of oils, Chinese opera, theater, book reviews, herpetology, Chinese quackery, societies and institutions, education, Chinese paintings & exhibitions, war on insects, ancient coins, female names, Yangtze gorges/river, geography, agriculture, fish, amphibians, boats, bids, aborigines of W. China, Yunnan, soap manufacture, opium and narcotics, Yang Kuei Fei, the most famous beauty of China, story of Chinese characters, Korea: Diamond mountains, China pony, ethnological investigations in Siberia, Mongolia & N. China. . * Photos of the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 in the Tokyo & Yokohama area; Hong Kong typhoon and damage, archaeological digs, conquest of Minya Konka [near Everest], flood control and the Yangtze menace, travel and exploration notes, Chinese deities, Chinese library, Chinese calendar, Eastern Tibetan nomads, phonetic system for China, resourceful woman, plants, flowers, beasts, whales, hunting big game, , exploration, cultural matters, folklore, all forms of art & archaeology, lacquer, bronzes, biology, medicine, zoology, philosophy, history, drama, theatre, literature, numismatics, obituaries, news, intelligence, Burma, French-Indo China, the Emperor.tons more ! The above was just extracted from a couple of volumes ! . * THE RUN: The set covers from volume 1, January, 1923 through the end of volume 19, December 1933. There were 12 monthly issues per year. Two bound parts equal one full year. . *** BINDING: This set is rather clean and bright; volume one is bound in the original cloth, the balance are in library buckram, all are exceptionally clean ex-Harvard library bookplate copies. There is an embossed library name on each front cover, barely visible of minor impact, otherwise no marks of any significance. . * Volume 1 from the publisher was bound without original covers; volume 2-19 with original covers bound in. There are a very few of the usual markings, original covers & first fly blind-stamped, discreet date and "withdrawn" stamps, the spines are without library mark and are printed in gold with rule lines, volume number and year cited. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *.
