Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Originally published in 1813, The Life of Horatio, Lord Nelson is one of the classics of early biography. The author, Robert Southey, was appointed Poet Laureate of England in the same year he published this book. Still regarded as England's greatest naval hero, Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson is… here depicted by a contemporary biographer, with access to many of the people who knew Nelson intimately. Our edition has been carefully edited by popular novelist and naval historian J.T. McDaniel, and includes a new Introduction and copious notes, making this one of the best modern editions of Southey's classic work.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. Three volumes of 19th century English poetry published by Macmillan, bound together as a three volume set. Alfred Tennyson was Poet Laureate during most of Queen Victoria's reign remains one of the most popular British poets today. He penned many short lyrics and much of his verse was based on classical m…ythological themes such as Ulysses. Tennyson published his first solo collection of poems in 1830. Born in Bristol in 1774, Robert Southey became best known as a member of 'The Lake Poets', a group which included William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Although his fame has been long eclipsed by that of his contemporaries and friends, Southey's verse still enjoys some popularity. 'The Golden Treasury' was originally selected for publication by Palgrave in 1861 and was revised and enlarged with help from Tennyson over the next few decades. Palgrave original excluded all poems by poets who were alive at the time. This volume is from the second series, published after Tennyson's death, and includes lyrical poetry from across the Victorian age. Collated, complete. In full calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed, with handling marks to the boards. Loss to head and tail of spine of Tennyson volume; the gilt lettering is unaffected. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright with the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Good. Various (illustrator). book.

In den WarenkorbVellum. Zustand: Good. First edition. A delightful volume comprising five satirical poems with Cruikshank's illustrations. Including the first separate edition of Coleridge and Southey's 'Devil's Walk'. Bound together are five satirical and comical poems from the likes Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey (under the pseudo…nym Professor Porson), William Thomas Moncrieff, H. W. Montagu, and John Taylor. All but Taylor's are first editions. Illustrated by eminent British caricaturist George Crukshank, perhaps best known for his internationally acclaimed book illustrations for Charles Dickens. A fascinating satirisation of the social and political standings of the early Victorian period. In contemporary full vellum, with gilt to the spine and marbled endpapers. Rubbed morocco spine label. Offering the following works: The Devil's Walk (Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey)- The second issue, with the omission of pp. 21-22 rectified [Wise p. 137]. Frontispiece and five plates. First published under the titleThe Devil's Thoughts, this poem describes the Devil amusing himself with the sight of the various sins of mankind. It was first published in 1799 by Coleridge and expanded by Southey in 1827. The poem was imitated by many over the years, notably by Shelley (The Devil's Walk, 1812) and Byron (The Devil's Drive, 1813). Minor poet H. W. Montagu provides an introduction and notes. Collated, complete. The Real Devil's Walk (Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey) - Frontispiece, six plates and numerous vignettes. A continuation of the previous, this time alluding to the use of a pseudonym with "Not by Professor Porson" to the title page. Collated, complete. The March of Intellect (W. T. Moncrieff) - A very scarce first edition, commenting on the social disruption and political unrest of England at the time, partly a result of mechanization. Frontispiece and six plates. Collated, complete. Monsieur Mallet: or, My Daughter's Letter. A Random Record (H. W. Montagu) - Frontispiece and five plates. Collated, complete. Monsieur Tonson (John Taylor) - The second edition. First published in 1808, this poem narrates a Mr Tom King continuously knocking on the door of a Frenchman to ask if a Mr Thompson lives there, to which the Frenchman replies that "No 'Monsieur Tonson'" lives there. Frontispiece and six plates. Collated, complete. Twenty-five pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In contemporary full vellum, with gilt to the spine. Externally, morocco spine label is significantly rubbed, with yellowing and handling marks to the vellum. Boards slightly sprung. Internally, generally firmly bound, with plate facing p. 17 to 'Monsieur Mallet' detached but present, and front free endpaper working loose slightly. Pages are bright and clean, with only the odd spot to the blanks. Rear free endpaper is clipped to the lower corner. Good. Robert Cruikshank (illustrator). book.

In den WarenkorbLondon, Marsh & Miller, [1830?]. 12mo. 33,[1] pp. W. 6 ills. (by Bonner and Slader, after R.Cruikshank). Later half leather. (binding sl.used; newspaper clippings from The Morning Post 1899 pasted on flyleaves; from the library of E.J. Kenney) Newspaper clippings -with information on the 'Porson incident' and the real authors of… this poem- added. "A runaway success of 1799 was the satirical ballad 'The Devil's Thoughts', published anonymously in the Morning Post and Gazetteer (no. 9569) on 6 September. The poem (written in fourteen four-line ballad stanzas) is narrated from the perspective of the Devil, who has ascended to the surface of the earth one morning. This is to see 'how his stock went on', that is to say, he gleefully observes the rampant inequities in the city expecting a good yield in Hell.1 The poem aims its barbs at lucrative professions, such as lawyers, apothecaries, and booksellers, but government policies of prisons and support for the war with France are also criticised. . We are told that the poem was written by the classical scholar Richard Porson at a dinner party where he supposedly hammered out the poem extempore . Connecting Porson with the poem made sense insofar as he was known for his oppositional political views and had published an unknown number of unsigned articles in the Morning Chronicle. . A significant development in the devil-ballad's history is the publication of a series of highly popular illustrated versions during 183031. The poem was now retitled The Devil's Walk, edited by H. W. Montagu and published by London booksellers Marsh and Miller in collaboration with Edinburgh-based Archibald Constable (Walter Scott's publisher). In the early editions (see the appended chronological List in Part ii of this essay), the ballad is attributed to Porson, and a four-page memoir of the classical scholar (including the anecdote of the dinner party) is inserted as a preface. The edition is a collated text with variant readings for several of the stanzas, which was necessary because the ballad had 'appeared in several publications and it had circulated in MS with various alterations and interpolations'." (R.W. Rix, 'FugitiveText. Robert Southey and S.T. Coleridge's Ballad of the Devil' ).
