Three papers, self-wraps 14x21cm. 92pp with b/w diagrams; 37; 15pp. This includes Sheepshanks' Letter (1st Edition, 1854), related "Correspondence prefixed" (published posthumously in 1860 alongside a 2nd edition of the Letter), and the unnamed Augustus De Morgan's "Memoir" (1856). Disbound from a larger volume with extraction residue to the spines. All text pages present including original titles. Worldcat refers to a portrait frontispiece for the "Correspondence prefixed" which is not present here (OCLC 83173407). Pages otherwise very good, tanned and foxed with minor loss to a title page corner (not affecting text). Rare in commerce. The Letter was prepared by the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) Vice President Richard Sheepshanks (1794-1855), identified here simply as "one of the visitors". It marks the dramatic climax to his long-running vendetta with inventor Charles Babbage, and RAS co-founder and first President James South. Sheepshanks, appointed RAS Secretary in 1829, fell out with South in 1832 over the latter's refusal to pay the maker Edward Troughton for a telescope mount he considered defective. With Sheepshanks' backing Troughton sued successfully, after which South destroyed the mount and held a highly publicised auction to sell its parts to local tradespeople. Meanwhile, Babbage had been in need of further public funds to develop his Difference Engine, and blamed Astronomer Royal George Airy (the Government's de facto chief scientific advisor) and his ally Sheepshanks for blocking this. In 1847 Sheepshanks publicly provoked both men in "A Reply to Mr Babbage's Letter to The Times, 'On the Planet Neptune and the Royal Astronomical Society's Medal'", claiming Babbage's allowance to assist South "has not produced a result worth recording in sixteen years [and his] calculating machine, after a lapse of twenty-three years and an outlay of many thousand pounds, has been abandoned as a total loss - nothing produceable but iron bars and brass wheels?". Babbage hit back in his "Exposition of 1851" in a chapter titled "The intrigues of science" on Troughton, the blocked funds, and Sheepshanks' abuse. In a concerted attack Mechanics Magazine carried a positive book review and a letter from South claiming Troughton had helped Sheepshanks evade import duty on a French instrument by forging his own mark on it (this happened back in 1823). Babbage used this material in unsuccessful attempts to have Sheepshanks ejected from the Royal Society at their 1852 AGM and RAS. His next chance came at the Royal Greenwich Observatory's Board of Visitors Meeting in June 1853 where he challenged Sheepshanks in person, causing a "near riot" by stating there was a criminal in their midst. Sheepshanks felt compelled to admit some of the charges, and Mechanics Magazine amplified its attack on him and Airy. Wounded and on the back foot he opens bullishly here, dismissing Babbage's book as a "very miscellaneous jumble" attributing his "blundering pertinacity to a diseased mind", South as his "intimate ally and tool", and Mechanics Magazine as "labouring in its vocation". He circulated an unfinished version at the next Greenwich Visitors Meeting, and completed copies at the Royal Society Anniversary Meeting in November. Within months he was dead, leaving South to continue the attack in response to the obituaries. The "Correspondence Prefixed" contains letters found in Sheepshanks' effects that he and South wrote to each other or The Times in 1838 for the benefit of public libraries "with certain explanatory additions" (Advertisement). In his "Memoir" for the RAS mathematician Augustus De Morgan provides a positive impression, and without naming South or Babbage ends: "[His] last publication was a defensive pamphlet - or partly defensive - in answer to an imputation, to which we need not here allude further than by describing it as an impeachment of his integrity".
