First Edition. 1954. 214pp. William Soutar (1898-1943) was a Scottish poet and diarist, who wrote in both English and Braid Scots, and was acknowledged as one of the best of modern Scottish poets when he died at the age of 45 after a long illness. During the 14 years he was bedfast he kept a record of his experiences and observations and his diaries provide a unique glimpse of a brave man facing the inevitability of death. This selection from his diaries is prefaced by a biographical introduction drawn from Soutar's private papers, and contains many little-known poems. The book is bound in the original blackcloth with gold titling to the spine. The case of the book is in excellent condition. Light to moderate foxing to edges. Offsetting to endpapers and a previous owner's name and date to the top of the ffep. The unclipped dustwrapper is also very good with some light wear to edges and rubbing to the spine. There is a smallish (1x1cm) stain to the front panel.
