The outer covers spotted, and the back cover grubby, otherwise in good condition, lightly aged. One vertical fold. The author's position, supported with statistical analysis, is that 'The present position is indefensible…as it stands; and it is becoming worse. But it is a logical and an absolutely legal consequence of the financial arrangements of the Act of Union, 1800, which made the United Parliament responsible for expenditure in Ireland, and of the Act of 1816 which consolidated the revenues of the two countries.' Ends with page-long appendix on 'The Present "Taxable Capacity" of Ireland'. This paper is said to have been to the British Association in Portsmouth in 1911, but it is not stated therein.

In den WarenkorbClowes is an eminent firm of English printers, founded in London in 1803, and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page, quarto, on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page, 12mo, with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall, with a few items aged and light…ly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes', who (he informs Wood in his first letter) has taken over from his cousin, Captain W. C. Knight Clowes (whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle). The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade, with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter (21 October 1915) he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade, because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased [.] I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four (14 August 1918) warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future', and letter five (27 March 1918) confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising, [.] we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six (20 March 1918) responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I [.] cannot in any way defend the printing. | I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came, and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce', but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition, machining and binding, owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916, and the large increase that took place then, and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15%, from 31 October 1917, 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter, which ends the series, Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. You may have seen the one in "The Times" for Wednesday last'.

A tasteful example of Victorian printing, by a printer whose calling card boasted of his 'Specialities in the best class of work.' Very good, lightly-aged. The word 'Sonnet.' is printed at the head in gothic type, the rest being in roman. The poem begi…ns: 'O GREATEST Poet of the living age! | For many a year to come thy fame will ring | Throughout the land. Grateful to thee, I bring | A simple tribute, writ on simpler page.' Beneath the sonnet, to the left, is the date 'June, 1892.', with 'E. DRAPER' on the right along the same line. At the foot of the page is the following, in italic: '[This Sonnet has been kindly received and approved by Lord Tennyson.]' A scarce piece of Tennysonian memorabilia, with no other copy located, either on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. The author is presumably Eleanor Draper, who published a number of works in Banbury between 1892 and 1915. The printers' details are not given, but the item comes from the archive of Cheney & Sons, 'General, Commercial & Artistic Printers, Banbury'. For more about the firm see 'John Cheney and his descendants, printers in Banbury since 1767' (1936) and the Victoria County History volume for the County of Oxford, Banbury Hundred.

Printed in large letters at the centre of the letterhead is 'Shropshire: Historical and Biographical', but there is no record of this title being publish…ed, or of any volume on Shropshire by Mates & Sons. From the context it appears that Lumley had a hand in Frederick John Snell's 'Devonshire, historical, descriptive, biographical', published by Mate & Sons in 1907. Lumley acknowledges receipt of the 'Memoir of the late Wm. Hardwicke Esq'. He was 'just on the point of leaving Exeter for Honiton' when it arrived, or would have replied sooner. He promises that the photographs of Turner and Sir Wyke Bayliss will be 'safely & duly returned'. His 'present address in Devonshire' is 'only of short duration untill [sic] all nobility, Members of Parliament &c have been interviewed'.

In den WarenkorbEngraved advertisement printed in dark blue, light blue and pink on both sides of 20 x 14 cm piece of unwatermarked wove paper. An amusing fake bank note or bond, designed to showcase the firm's competency. The paper stock and layout are entirely consistent with the firm's work. On one side, instead of a picture of a monarch or…president, is the face of a rather imperious young woman (one of the directors' wives?), together with a design featuring the fasces and motto 'VIS UNITA FORTIOR'. The text on that side reads: 'Waterow & Sons Limited / London / Established 1810 / Telegrams / Imprimerie London / Manufacturers of / Bank Notes / Bonds / Stamps / and all other / High-Class Securities / Postage Stamp Printers and Contractors to the British Government.' On the other side is a Landseer-style lion, with a cruiser behind it sailing into the sunset, and the royal crest and the firm's details, with a description of its trade as 'Manufacturers of British, Colonial & Foreign Bank Notes, Bonds, Postage and Revenue Stamps, Share Certificates, Policies of Assurance, Circular Notes, Business Cards, Letters of Credit, Headings for Invoices, Letter and Note Papers, Chequs & Commercial Stationery, etc.' See Image.
