On one side of piece of paper 23.5 x 16 cm. With perforated edge. Good, on aged paper, with traces with strip of glue from previous mount on reverse. Printed in copperplate. The deposited works are 'Notes on the Maces, Insignia of Office, and Town Plate of the Town of Guildford', 'Progress of Catholic Work', 'Token Pamphlet', 'Guildford Shakespeare' and 'County Town'. Ostensibly signed by the 'Keeper', but the signature is not decipherable (''). In his obituary in The Times, 6 July 1942, Williamson was praised as 'a highly industrious and versatile writer on art'.…

4to bifolium (leaf dimensions 26 x 20.5 cm). The notification certificate is on the recto of the first leaf, and Highton's letter is on the recto of the second. Versos of both leaves blank. Good, on lightly aged and creased paper, with 5 cm closed tear to margin of second leaf caused by removal of letter from stub, traces of which still adhere to the verso of the second leaf. The certificate is tastefully printed in black, with the Society's crest in red in the top left-hand corner. The Society's address on the letterhead has been corrected by Highton from 4 St Martin's Place to 21 Delahay Street, St James's Park. The 'private note' (twenty-five lines including seventeen-line postscript) covers the whole of the recto of the second leaf. Highton congratulates Williamson, and gives some information regarding the Society before concluding with information regarding his forthcoming 'Shakespearian Work', 'somewhat retarded by the advice of the Publishers & Booksellers not to issue it until the deluge of Xmas Books was over, & likewise by the great difficulties attending the attempt to secure an American copyright'. She begins by explaining that at her 'interview with Mr. Bell on the 8th. he suggested an alteration in an important sentence, giving me the alternative of taking the MS. home with me or of correcting the sentence in the proofs. At the time I thought the latter course would be the best, but it occurs to me that it would save expence if the correction was made now.' She asks Cazenove to 'ask Mr. O'Connor if he would kindly alter the words in accordance with the enclosed [not present]'. She indicates the relevant sentence, adding that she assumes that 'it is the publishers who bear the cost of necessary alteration to the proofs, as nothing was said about it in the agreement'. Turning to the problem of 'how it is that a story supposed to be told by a man is written by a woman', she admits that she 'cannot think of anything that would do' by way of introductory explanation. 'Perhaps the title might read - | The Tramping Methodist. | The narrative of Humphrey Lyte, Preacher. | I would rather have this than put "edited by" before my name on the title page.' It does not appear that the suggested subtitle was utilised.…
