Hardback. Zustand: Good. On a visit to the British National Archive in 2001, Sonke Neitzel made a remarkable discovery: reams of meticulously transcribed conversations among German POWs that had been covertly recorded and recently declassified. Neitzel would later find another collection of transcriptions, twice as extensive, in the National Archive in Washington, D.C. These were discoveries that would provide a unique and profoundly important window into the true mentality of the soldiers in the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, the German navy, and the military in general--almost all of whom had insisted on their own honorable behavior during the war. Collaborating with renowned social psychologist Harald Welzer, Neitzel examines these conversations--and the casual, pitiless brutality omnipresent in them--from a historical and psychological perspective, and in reconstructing the frameworks and situations behind these conversations, they have created a powerful narrative of wartime experience.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. The authors discovered 150,000 pages of transcriptions of secretly recorded conversations among German prisoners of war, of which approximately one third were made in P.O.W. camps in Britain, another cache was made by bugging prisoners in the Mediterranean theatre of the war (North Africa, Malta, Italy) and the remainder comes from the bugging of prisoners of war in the USA. These transcriptions are thus unmediated, uncensored, and unselfconsciously candid and that is what gives this book its historical significance and extraordinary impact. What emerges from these transcriptions and within these pages is a shocking and profoundly illuminating portrait of the typical German soldier of the time: their thoughts, their feelings and their ideologies. SOLDATEN is a book that explodes many of the myths that we hold on to about Germany and its people during the War. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

PAPERBACK, very good, front corner of a few pages bumped. NEITZEL, SÖNKE / WELZER, HARALD. Soldaten: on fighting, killing, and dying : the secret World War II tapes of German POWs. London: Simon & Schuster UK, 2013, x, 437pp., . In November 2001, German historian Sönke Neitzel discovered a cache of documents from the Second World War. They were the transcripts of German prisoners of war talking among themselves in prisoner of war camps, and secretly recorded by the allies. In these apparently private conversations the soldiers talked openly about their hopes and fears, their concerns and their day-to-day lives. They also talked about the horrors of war - about rape, death and killing. Sönke Neitzel shared the material with renowned psychologist Harald Wezler and they set about trying to make sense of the vast piles of documents. The result is 'Soldaten', a landmark book which will change the way we look at soldiers and war, and is as relevant to our modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan as it was to the soldiers of the German Army in 1945. - CONTENTS: What the soldiers discussed -- The soldiers' world -- Fighting, killing, and dying -- Frame of reference: annihilation -- Sex -- Technology -- Faith in victory -- Ideology -- Success -- Frame of reference: war -- How national socialist was the Wehrmacht's war? -- War as work -- Appendix: The surveillance protocols.
