Hardcover. Zustand: New. The cloth that clothed Empires—A legend Explores the global history of muslin, from ancient Bengal to its place in international trade and empire. Showcases rare muslin and jamdani textiles from the Victoria and Albert Museum, highlighting their artistry and craftsmanship. Examines the cultural, political, and economic forces that shaped muslin's rise, decline, and lasting legacy as one of the world's most celebrated fabrics. Muslin is a fabric of almost mythical reputation. Renowned for its extraordinary fineness, it was described in the seventeenth century as "the shadow of a commodity", a phrase that captures its almost weightless, translucent quality. Yet behind its delicate beauty lies a more complex story, woven into the history of the East India Company, imperial trade, and colonial power. An open-textured cotton cloth, muslin was woven to varying degrees of fineness depending on the quality of the yarn and the exceptional skill of its spinners and weavers. The name "muslin" is often attributed to the Venetian traveller Marco Polo, who linked it to the textile trade of Mosul in present-day Iraq, a major centre connecting India and the Mediterranean. Although this origin remains debated, the fabric itself has been associated with Bengal since ancient times, where it was known as mull or mulmul. Drawing on the remarkable collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, this book presents these exquisite textiles while exploring their rich cultural history, craftsmanship, and enduring legacy.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Pioneering publication exploring in depth the lost textile traditions of Bengal from the 16th to 20th century and impact on the historical and cultural aspects of the region. The famed Bengal textiles which once 'clothed the world' have received little scholarly attention. With the systemic destruction of Bengal's textile industry, prompted by the Industrial Revolution in Europe, the muslins and Balucharis of Bengal were lost in obscurity. The partition of the Indian subcontinent and the consequent varieties of cultural and social identity in present-day India and Bangladesh have contributed to this neglect. This pioneering publication explores in depth the lost textile traditions of Bengal from the 16th to the 20th century and traces its impact on the historical and cultural aspects of the region. Supported by superb illustrations of textiles, maps and trade documents from the past, most of which have never been published before, the book serves as a public history, with engaging chapters presenting a unique perspective on the textiles of wider Bengal. This volume will inspire the reader, reorient scholarly attention and provoke a rethinking of the nature and history of Bengal textiles.

This pioneering publication explores in depth the lost textile traditions of Bengal from the 16th to the 20th century and traces its impact on the historical and cultural aspects of the region. This book is conceived as a dialogue between historians, anthropologists, art historians, textile practitioners and textile scholars who bring their diverse perspectives and expertise on the fundamental catalysts of change in the textile tradition of Bengal. The book serves as a public history, with engaging chapters presenting a unique perspective on the textiles of wider Bengal supported by superb illustrations of textiles, maps and trade documents from the past, most of which have never been published before. The first issue appeared in April 1893. The first serving editor was Joseph Gleeson White (Lewis Hind had acted as editor for four months before the launch of the magazine). In 1895 Holme took over as editor himself, although Gleeson White continued to contribute. Holme retired as editor in 1919 for reasons of health, and was succeeded by his son Charles Geoffrey Holme, who was already the editor of special numbers and year-books of the magazine.
