The Committee includes representatives from major publishing h…ouses and others (OUP, Longmans, Cassell, Chatto & Windus, Macmillans, etc, and Zaehnsdorff). The removeable donation slip is still present and blank, requiring the name and addres of the donor, and a date.

The front paste-down off…ers 'Practical Hints as to how to Use the Palette and Colours'. The Palette is here present, a book-shaped card with thumb-hole, glazed to one side for the paints, a few splodges of which are still seen. The Paint Box, a black enamel tinned container with its full complement of 12 blocks of paint, is contained within a cut out at the top of the book block, c.4 x 2.5 inches. Two of the six illustrations have been competently copied. None of the other outline pictures has been painted in.

BL identifies the author as 'Thomas T. Shaw'; another source states 'Thomas J. Shaw'. 47pp, 8vo. In green printed wraps. Stapled. Lightly aged, in worn wraps, and with sli…ght blooming at head of first few leaves. The author goes about the 'self-imposed task' of his 'little brochure' with copious statistical evidence, including an eight-page appendix of tables. He concludes: 'As I have worked unaided and unassisted I may have made mistakes, but I have felt impelled to publish this little work in my country's interest as, after an examination of the various returns, I felt quite sure that the basis on which the Treasury calculations relating to Ireland were being made in many respects were not prepared in a manner to attribute to Ireland the revenue really and properly attributable to it.' There is a discussion of 'home-made spirits', and it may be that the author is the Thomas James Shaw, 'managing partner in the firm of Joseph Shaw and Son, Mullingar', who gave evidence to a royal commission in 1908.

Sadleir, in XIX Century Fiction, describes this as "A Prospectus of the Standard and Favourite Novels issued in January 1882". Given it's date, I would suggest it's a "Commemorativ…e Catalogue" of a series which has great significance in publishing history. It gives the information present in Sadleir (II.100-4), but it calls the "phantom" "Second Series (Sadleir) Bentley's Standard Novels. The Re-Issue. 1854-1859?". It also lists (not Sadleir), Bentley's Favourite Novels, 1863-1882, adding three titles "to follow in 1882", with nos.83-100 left blank. The limitation to one hundred copies begs questions about distribution, but the Bentley's were not averse to quality publishing in limited numbers, for personal pleasure or very limited distribution (eg. perhaps publishers at a dinner sale? or similar). Not listed on COPAC or WorldCat. See Image.
