4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper, with closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed to 'John Hunter Esqre | Auditor of Court of Sn.' Written three months before Jeffrey's death, the letter begins: 'My dear Hunter - I hope you do not think that I have been forgetful of you - or indiffere…nt to your fortunes - or ungrateful for your very kind expressions - and I firmly believe feelings - towards me - because I may appear to have been slow in offering you my congratulations on your late appointment [as Auditor of the Court of Sessions]'. Taking up the new appointment will involve Hunter 'relinquishing the situation of [Jeffrey's] private agent and adviser', and this has been a source of 'some anxiety': 'at my age, and with my habits [it is] a great misfortune and embarrassment'. The letter continues with a discussion of the matter. 'I can easily see that your engagements in your new office, may make this matter difficult to arrange - but I wish much that it shld be arranged, if possible, before the courts meet on 13 Novr'. In a postscript he assures him that he believes that he owes his appointment 'entirely to your own merits - and the general good opinion which these merits have won for you'. For more on John Hunter, friend of Leigh Hunt and the Carlyles, whose sister Elizabeth Helen Hunter (1798-1824) married Francis Jeffrey's brother John (1775-1848), and who took over the tenancy of Craigcrook Castle after Jeffrey's death, see Helen Watt, 'John Hunter, the Forgotten Tenant of Craigcrook' (Edinburgh, 1977).

He agrees with Clarke's 'feeling as to possessing s…omething coming from, or belonging to some great or good man. It is a link - as is the signature of a loved friend or companion, with the unseen world.' He enquires after Clarke's health, and recalls 'calling at your School once - & another time at your house'. He ends in the hope that 'Mr & Mrs. Cholmondeley will be spared to you all very many years!'.

If lady Theresa derives half the pleasure from its perusal which Mr C. has derived on at least three occasions she will indeed have a great treat.' He thanks her for her 'correction of his error about the Russell & Murray picture', and 'observes that Dallaway [in his 'Anecdotes of the Arts in England', 1800] states its after locality as 'Ombresley Worcestershire."' He names another picture mentioned by Dallaway of which he has 'no recollection', asking her to 'help him in this matter'. He ends 'Mr Cunningham knows some curious particulars about Mrs. Kirke - a great beauty in her day.'.

He writes that Jerdan has referred him to Moran 'for inquiry respecting him'. He is satisfied with Jerdan's account, but as he is 'a stranger to me & I am acting for others as well as myself I wish to as…k whether in your opinion we may place reliance upon him in every respect as to his making out from the Books & adjusting some complicated accounts of a Provincial Newspaper & some disputed balances thereon'. TWO: Moran's reply to Pryme. 1p., 12mo, on the reverse of the second leaf of the bifolium. Not a draft. He is 'not aware of Mr Jerdan's proficiency in the particular class of accounts' referred to by Pryme, but he does not 'think him capable of undertaking any thing which he could not perform satisfactorily. When he was a Candidate for the Secretaryship of the Literary Fund Society he had my vote & active aid as one of the Committee of that Corporation: & I would if called on readily renew my efforts in his behalf.' Jerdan's father was the editor of the Literary Gazette. Pryme's lectures on political economy at Cambridge were the first on the subject at any British university.

CRAPO in Tinte eigenhänd…ig signiert (Signatur gelocht) State of Michigan, City of East Saginaw 3.XI.1882, ausgestellt für JOHN F. KIMBALL (1815-88) und von diesem rückseitig indossiert und signiert. ( Share of the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad Company, issued 1. July 1882 / The Flint & Pere Marquette Railway Company wurde 1857 gegründet und startete mit der Bahn-Verbindung von East Saginaw (Firmensitz) nach Mt. Morris. Neben dem Personenverkehr wurden hauptsächlich Holz und Salz transportiert. 1874 kam die Strecke Monroe am Lake Erie nach Ludington am Lake Michigan hinzu und wurde später noch durch die Verbindung nach Port Huron, Bay City und ins Saginaw Valley vervollständigt. Durch einen Zusammenschluß mit weiteren Bahnen aus Michigan wurde 1899 daraus die Pere Marquette Railroad Company, 1917 die Pere Marquette Railway und ging 1947 in der Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad auf. Der Druck der filigran gestalteten Papiere stammt von der American Banknote Company in New York. Die kleine Stahlstichvignette ist besonders detailreich, ein kleines Meisterwerk der Stahlstecher jener Zeit, speziell der kleine Hundekopf am Unterrand. Handschriftlich ausgestellt und unterschrieben. Die Erhaltung ist alters entsprechend gut, die Papiere sind durch Lochungen entwertet. ).
