Yet the reader?s first reaction is one of disappointment: the title (?) promises more than it provides. In the first part we are given some sixty rules which are indeed an essential part of the generative phonology of Greek, but cannot by any means offer an exhaustive account of it. This may explain why a number of doubts and queries remain. (?). At the present stage or research it is difficult to know how much this is due to the nature of Greek phonology, how much to the theory used to describe it, and how much to the particular slant of this book. It would not be right to conclude on this note. This is not a definitive description of Attic Greek phonology ? but theory and facts will require further consideration ? but is a good step towards it: it will be difficult to ignore it.? (A. XII, 242 pp. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A perfect copy. - Thesmophoriazusae is perhaps the funniest of all Aristophanes comedies, in which gender inversion and transvestism run riot as the tragic dramatist Euripides is made to take part in a hilarious spoof on some of his own favourite plot lines, with his own life at stake as well as that of his own loyal and much-put-upon old relative. This edition offers a freshly constituted text making use of papyri published within the last few years, together with the first fully annotated English translation there has been of this play. - From the Introduction: The date of production of Aristophanes' Thesmophoriazusae ("Women celebrating the Ttesmophoria") is not directly attested, but can be inferred with confidence from internal evidence as having been the City Dionysia of the Athenian year corresponding to 412/1 BC, in the spring of 411. The evidence is as follows: (1) Thesm. was produced the year after Euripides' Andromeda (cf. 1060-1), which was produced "in the eighth year before Ar.'s Frogs (schol. Frogs 53), which was produced in the Athenian year 406/5; since the use of ordinal numbers in stating time-intervals normally implies that the interval is being reckoned inclusively, this means that Athenian new years intervened between the two events, and hence that Andromeda was produced in 413/2 and Thesm. in 412/1. (2) A scholiast on Thesm. 190 says that Euripides died "in the sixth year" after the production of the play. Euripides died in the Athenian year 407/6 according to the Parian Chronicle (FGrH 239 A 63); on the other hand Diodorus Siculus (13.103.4), recording the death of Sophocles in 406/5, mentions that according to Apollodorus (FGrH 244 F 35) Euripides died "in the same year. These notices point to a date for Thesm. in 412/1 or 411/0 respectively; if we accept the story in the ancient Life of Euripides (44-47 Nauck) that Sophocles paid a public tribute to Euripides' memory at a dramatic festival following his death (which could only have happened in early 406, since Sophocles was dead before the Lenaea of 405) it would point firmly, as did (1), to 412/1 for the production of Thesm.
