Violet Florence Martin (1862-1915) was born in West Galway. The two met in 1886, and their literary collaboration lasted until 1915, ending with the death of V. F. Martin. Both worked for woman suffrage in Ireland, and Somerville continued to write under their joint pseudonym, believing in Martin's continued spirit-connection [see Blain et al.
