Author: Somerset Bateman Title: Simon de Montfort: His Life and Work Publication Details: Birmingham: Cornish Brothers, Publishers to the University, 1923. Condition: Excellent condition. Description: A particularly appealing and historically interesting presentation copy of Simon de Montfort: His Life and Work by Somerset Bateman, published in Birmingham by Cornish Brothers in 1923. The volume is bound in an attractive decorative school prize binding with gilt decoration, featuring the school motto "1520 COLE DEUM" stamped in gilt on the front cover and an ornate spine with gilt title panels against a red background. The page edges are also coloured, enhancing the decorative appearance of the book. Of exceptional interest is the original presentation label from The Grammar School, Coleshill, awarded for "General Progress" to D.E.M. Pridmore of Form IV in July 1926. The prize label is signed by the Headmaster, notably Somerset Bateman himself, who was also the author of the work, giving the volume an especially desirable association and provenance. The binding remains bright and firm, with the gilt decoration exceptionally well preserved. Internally, the book is clean and fresh throughout. An unusually attractive and well-preserved interwar school presentation copy linking the author directly to the educational institution presenting the award. Signed by Author(s).
