This is the famous "Bible de Royaumont," popular in France and elsewhere in Europe from the latter part of the 17th century on. This very rare 1764 edition was published in Vienna. Sieur de Royaumont is assumed to be a pseudonym for Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709) - a historiographer of Port-Royal and companion in captivity of Lemaistre de Sacy in Bastille. It was issued in various formats and reissued after the first edition appeared in Paris 1670. 195mm tall x120mm. 596 pages. Rebound in full brown calf, in fine condition, but loose at spine. First pre-title page missing. Some tanning, but overall in very good condition. Profusely illustrated with many engravings. Corner of page 301 torn with a few words of text cut off, but otherwise in very good condition.

This remarkable and early edition of de Royaumont's classic history of the Bible (first published in 1670) is superbly illustrated with 267 in text copper plate engravings (183 for the Old Testament, and 84 for the New Testament). Spine and edges of binding rubbed. Very light damp-staining along endpapers and on lower part of last pages (from page 504 forward), else a very good copy. Edition nouvelle, enrichie de Figures en taille-douce.

La obra en su interior se encuentra bastante fatigada, a falta de la primera pagina y otras diversas faltas en varias hojas del principio. Pero la encuadernación se encuentra en bastante buen estado, con tan solo algunos roces y pequeñas zonas más oscuras en la piel. Livre en français BÍBLICA.

Separate title page for the New Testament. Contains all 271 engravings, including the two by Le Clerc on pages 21 and 331. Several very nice dragons appearing in Revelations, as well. Engravings are on every odd numbered page. Inserted pages present between 296 and 297. Four or five engravings have an orange grid drawn lightly over them. Measures 8.5 x 11.5 inches. Wide margins. Engravings are 4 x 6 inches. Margins thumbed and sometimes darkened. General toning to the paper. A few small examples of paper repair, a few small holes, bottom quarter of page 55/56 repaired with large paper patch. A but of wrinkling to the bottom inside corner of the final 20-30 pages as if from long-ago moisture. Despite the lengthy list of flaws, the book is here in its entirety and is only a short visit to the binder from cleaning up quite nicely. This is the scarce first edition of the illustrated seventeenth century French bible. At the date of the posting, this is the only copy in the United States. Bound in later full leather by Otto Mintzlaff, gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Mintzlaff's stamp is on the front pastedown, later small ink presentation on the front fly leaf. The front joint is split, small mended tear at the crown, two preliminary "Avertissement" text pages are soiled, the upper right corner and fore-edge of the second Avertissement leaf is partially damaged, and a few short tears to the upper right corner and margin of about three other leaves, else very good. The many fine copperplate engravings throughout the text are bright and clean. A scarce, early folio edition of Fontaine's classic retelling of the Scripture in prose for children. Commonly known by his pseudonym as the *Bible of Royaumont*, this copy is also notable for the high artistic quality of its engravings.

Gilt on edges of binding partly faded. Free front endpaper slightly chipped and partly detached. Minor foxing throughout. Text in French. Très jolie bible de Royaumont, illustrée d?un frontispice gravé par Jan Baptist Berterham (1687 - ca. 1722; et de 267 vignettes à mi-page de Pieter Devel.- Louis-Isaac Lemaistre (oder Lemaître) de Sacy (1613-1684 auf Schloss Pomponne nahe Paris), französischer Theologe, Bibelübersetzer und Humanist. Er ist vor allem aufgrund seiner französischen Bibelübersetzung, der Bibel von Port-Royal bekannt.Von 1666 bis Oktober 1667 war Sacy in der Bastille inhaftiert. Während dieser Zeit widmete er sich seinem späteren Hauptwerk, der Bibelübersetzung ins Französische, mit der sein Bruder Antoine (? 1658) im Jahr 1657 begonnen hatte. An dieser Übersetzung und den zugehörigen Bibelkommentaren arbeitete Sacy bis zu seinem Lebensende im Jahr 1684. Die Bibelübersetzung entstand von katholischer Seite auch in Reaktion auf die Bibelübersetzungen der Reformatoren. Basis der Übersetzung war die Vulgata, wobei auch Schriften der Kirchenväter und griechische sowie hebräische Quellen textkritisch hinzugezogen wurden.Die Bibelübersetzung war nicht nur das Werk eines Einzelnen, sondern viele Theologen und Freunde im Umkreis von Port-Royal wirkten daran mit. Das Neue Testament erschien 1667 bei Daniel Elzevier in Mons und ist auch unter Bezeichnung Nouveau Testament de Mons oder ?Bibel von Mons? bekannt. Das Alte Testament erschien nach und nach in Einzelteilen in den Jahren 1672 bis 1696. Die später so genannte ?Bibel von Port-Royal? gehörte über Jahrhunderte zu den einflussreichsten und am weitesten verbreiteten Bibelübersetzungen in französischer Sprache.Sacy selbst betrachtete seine Übersetzungen und Bibelkommentare nicht unkritisch. Er fürchtete, dass durch die vermeintliche Klarheit seiner Übersetzung etwas von der Mystik und Dunkelheit der ursprünglichen Bibelworte verlorengegangen sei und dass er den Inhalt in seinem Bemühen um möglichst getreue Übersetzung doch zu sehr ?redigiert? habe. 1100 gr. Cette traduction de la Bible par Louis-Isaac Le Maistre de Sacy (1613-1684), est vraiment la première à présenter un texte accessible à ceux qui ne connaissaient pas le latin. Cette Bible, dite "Bible de Port-Royal" a paru pour la 1re fois en 32 volumes en 1696.
