Dissection of Craterodiscus pricei McMichael, 1959 shows that it cannot be classified in the Helicarionidae as originally suggested. It appears to be the most primitive species of the helicacean land snails yet dissected and is referred tentatively to the Camaenidae, s.l. Scanning electron micro-scope studies of the radula revealed that it has one of the most remarkable cusp structures found in a pulmonate snail. 9 pp., 1 pl., br. gr. 8.…

Now at the start of his 60th year as a publishing scientist, this paper appropriately reviews and summarizes the career of Fritz Haas. The bare statistics of his career are impressive - a bibliography with 319 entries and a list of 385 new genera and species produced over 6 decades. This paper provides biographical data and highlights of his career in malacology. 76 pp., br. 8.…

The genitalia and radular structure of several Mesodon [M. binneyanus, M. clenchi, M. clausus] and Triodopsis [T. (Neohelix) albolabris alleni, T. (N.) divesta, T. platysayoides] from Arkansas, Oklahoma and West Virginia [USA] are illustrated and discussed in relation to their potential significance in phylogenetic studies. The structure of the verge, penial pilaster details, penial sheath muscle attachment, and details of radular cusping are emphasized. 12 pp., 29 figs, 4.…

Dissection and scanning electron microscope studies of the Virginia land snail, Pylygyriscus virginianus (Burch, 1947), show that this species, previously associated with either Polygyra or Helicodiscus, is related to Helicodiscus and Stenopylis. The family group Helicodiscidae is redefined and differences from possibly related family units noted. 7 pp., 8 figs, gr. 8.…

Land snails sorted from bagged leaf litter on Karoni, Lakemba, and Mothe Islands in the Lau Archipelago of Fiji numbered 35 species. Literature and Field Museum of Natural History collection records add four others for a total of 39 species. There are now 13 recorded from Mothe, 20 from Karoni, and 22 from Lakemba. Nine of these taxa are introductions from outside the Pacific basin, dating from European commercial activities; three probably were introduced by Polynesian voyagers; and 27 probably are endemic to Lau. Many of the latter belong to widely distributed Pacific basin species complexes and cannot be assigned a specific name with certainty, but several are restricted to just one or two islands in Lau. The diversity of species on each island dies not follow the species-area curve. 7 pp., gr. 8.…
