"No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!" - Earth First!…Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group, and the monkey wrench is their ever-present emblem and tool. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice" (Dave Foreman, 1980s). The late-1980s and early-1990s were a tumultuous time for Earth First! Law enforcement cracked down on its members, and various internal issues and factions began to form within the group. Earth First! embraced non-hierarchical structures and organic methods of organization and growth, while continuing to focus on direct action in defense of wilderness as its primary focus. Through the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's, the journal continued to be published in various forms under the direction of a diverse and rotating collective of voices from within the broad Earth First! movement. Regular print publication of the Earth First! Journal under this title seems to have ceased sometime in the early 2020s, though the movement still survives and maintains a presence online and on social media. This is the twentieth anniversary edition/issue of this publication. The front cover artwork, by Peggy Sue McRae, is a collage of images and portraits from the history of the Earth First! movement. This issue contains a lengthy article on the history of the publication of this journal entitled "Twenty Years of The Radical Environmental Journal: The Life and Times of Our Beloved JournalA Not-So-Brief History" by Kris Maenz (beginning on page 12). A facsimile of the first page of the first issue (Samhain, Nov 1, 1980, Volume 1 Number 1) is reproduced on page [1] ("How it all beganThe first page of the premier edition of Earth First!"). The "Armed with Visions" poetry page appears on pages 59-60 and features a poem entitled "The Earth's Wild Places" by Gary Snyder. Front inner cover artwork in full color entitled "Keeping It Wild for 20yrs" by Slugthang. Rear inner cover artwork in full color is a comic art portrait entitled "John Muir" by John Dolley ("No John, Uncle Sam won't save the Forests!!"). From Zine Wiki: The Floating Bear was a newsletter that ran from 1961 to 1971, edited in New York, NY, U.S.A., first by Diane di Prima and Leroi Jones and then later, by issue 25, by Diane alone. Published nearly every month and distributed by mailing list only, it was a fantastic platform for several s…chools of writing to come together, including the Beat writers, the New York School, Black Mountain and other revolutionary writers of that time. Later, after issue 28, when di Prima relocated to Topanga, CA, it featured some of the San Francisco Renaissance writers. This weighty carrier of words held the works of Frank O Hara, Michael McClure, Ed Dorn, Charles Olson, Joel Oppenheimer, Diane Levertov, Phillp Whalen, Jack Spicer, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, William S. Burroughs, John Wieners and both the editors, plus many more. It was never sold and supported by the editors and donations. The people who received copies were considered part of a literary and creative community, all of them kindred spirits. It was a great tool of the times as this mimeographed newsletter would reach a few hundred people every few weeks. So, if your work was showcased, it was read and quick. 37 issues were printed. The last issue printed as 'The Intrepid-Bear Issue' (Intrepid no 20/ Floating Bear no 38. ) LeRoi Jones was arrested for homoerotic content of his play Dante's System of Hell in Issue 9. You can find a great deal about this publication in a few Diane di Prima s novels and writings. Very good. light shelf wear, mild general toning, errata sheet included.

Hotcha! was the first continental European magazine to join the [US-based] Undergro…und Press Syndicate, a media organization of international underground and alternative magazines, founded in 1966 by John Wilcock and Walter Bowart. [ "Urban Gwerder (5 September 1944 - 4 July 2017) was a Swiss artist, writer and publicist. Between 1966 and 1976 he often functioned as the official reporter and touring companion of Zappa whenever he toured continental Europe. He was the publisher of an underground magazine named Hotcha (1968- 1971), which published a lot of articles about and interviews with Frank Zappa to the point that it was comparable with an archive. Hotcha also received an English-language edition. In 1973 he also founded a music fanzine named Hot Raz Times. Gwerder published two books about Zappa, namely Frank Zappa et les Mothers of Invention (with Alain Dister, 1975, Editions Albin Michel) and Alla Zappa. Festschrift (Painting Box Press, 197 6). The latter was published as a companion piece to an exhibition about Zappa, combined with concerts by the Mothers of Invention in Zürich that same year. A compilation of his articles and photographs was published in 1 998 as Im Zeichen des Magischen Affen, which also came with a bonus CD, Berglers Balz, with an unreleased Zappa track named Eternal Motherly Goodbye Collage.
