The author was a Dutch-born physician who, in 1938, was assigned to pre-war Peiping [Beijing] by the Rockefeller Foundation as Head the Department of Medicine of the Peiping Union Medical College. While Dr. Snapper treated the same diseases that he had observed in Western patients in past, his experience in north China at the time gave him the opportunity to observe the progression and treatment of these diseases among a population living under vastly different conditions with regard to exposure to other pathogens, as well as suffering under an extremely poor diet and hygiene environment.
