Original printed paper wrappers. *** Patrick James Smyth (1823-1885) was a member of the "Young Ireland" movement and made his way to America after the failed rebellion of 1848. In 1854 he organised the escape of John Mitchell and other Irish prisoners from Tasmania. After r…eturning to Ireland he was elected Member of Parliament for Co. Westmeath in 1871 and also for Co. Tipperary in 1880. His opposition to the Land League caused him to be unpopular with nationalists. On the principle enunciated in this speech - the principle of O'Connell and O'Brien - Mr. Smyth contested Waterford city, in 1870, with Mr. Bernal Osborne. At that time "Home Rule" was not in existence. On the same principle, specifically defined in his Addresses, he was returned, unopposed, for Westmeath in 1871, and re-elected in 1874. At the Conference in Dublin, in 1873, where the Home Rule programme was formulated, he affirmed his own principle, saying:- "Repeal of the Union is the only logical ground on which a constitutional demand for self-government can be based;" but agreed to let the new plan have a trial.
