Zustand: Sehr gut. XIV, 322 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Partly bleached jacket, otherwise very good and clean. / Teils verblichener Umschlag, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - R. Malcolm Smuts examines the fundamental cultural changes that occurred within the English royal court between the last decade of the sixteenth century and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642. During this period the English court developed into one of the most sophisticated and cosmopolitan in all Europe. It acquired a taste for the drama and poetry of the English Renaissance and discovered the art and architecture of the European continent. Charles I, who reigned from 1625 to 1649, was arguably the most distinguished royal art patron of his generation. The court styles that emerged during his reign profoundly influenced the development of English aristocratic culture down to the nineteenth century. Smuts treats the development of poetry and drama, art and architecture, music, pageantry, religion and intellectual culture in a social and political context. By providing a synthesis of perspectives which are normally treated separately, he gives an account of the cultural environment in which Charles reigned that is more systematic and balancd than any other currently in print. This full-scale reassessment of early Stuart court culture contributes to an understanding of the economics of cultural patronage and the outlook of early Stuart patrons and artists, including Inigo Jones, Ben Jonson and Charles himself. This book will be invaluable to historians seeking a deeper understanding of a topic that has been treated primarily impressionistically, and for art historians and literary critics who desire a fuller and more careful investigation of the environment in which court poets and artists worked. - R. MALCOLM SMUTS is Associate Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. ISBN 9780812280395 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 653 Original cloth with dust jacket.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Court Culture and the Origins of a Royalist Tradition in Early Stuart EnglandR. Malcolm Smuts'The sharpest feature of this book is that it takes poetry, pictures, and architecture seriously by seeing these as major items of historical testimony. . . . An engaging and sensitive study.'--American Historical Review'Smuts's great strength is his grasp of the politics of the age. . . . At every point he is able to buttress his arguments about Charles I's 'cultural policy' by reference to Charles's social, economic, and foreign policy.'--Journal of Modern History'The book's virtues are numerous. Smuts, a historian, has read widely, pulling together much valuable information while offering intelligent insights of his own. . . . Particularly valuable is the book's emphasis on the social and factional complexity of the court and thus of the art it produced and consumed.'--Sixteenth Century Journal'Smuts's book deserves a wide readership. Provocative in the best sense of the word, it challenges the reader at every turn and offers a running commentary on possibilities for future research.'--Journal of British StudiesIn this work R.
