Covers good, partially faded with split to cloth at spine head, interiors near fine, foxed in places. Inscribed to the title page "To Colonel Leslie Beves from whose labours this Brigade came into being", with the Ex-Libris plate of Paul Howard Beves to the front pastedown. Sir Thomas Berry Cusack-Smith, KCMG, 5th Baronet (1859-1929) commanded the 1st Home Counties Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. This presents his first hand account of service in India and Iraq during 1914-16 up to the Fall of Kut. He also includes descriptions of Bombay, Mhow, Basra, and Nasiriyah. He was made an Honorary Colonel in 1917. He had previously served as Consul to Samoa (1890-97), and Consul General at Valparaiso (1898-1907). His papers on colonial Samoa and life in rural Essex are held in the National Library of New Zealand. Very rare (4 holdings located at British Library, IWM, National Army Museum, Kansas University).
