An early edition, the first edition was published c.1870, and one of many described as 'Books For The Country, priced 1s.' 12 b.w. engraved plates, Plate 1 serves as the frontispiece, the remainin…g plates are bound together at the back of the book, many b.w. text illustrations of moths and detailed line diagrams throughout. pp.154, publisher's catalogues printed on both front and rear paste-downs, free end-papers and lower cover. Intended as an introduction for the young Entomologist and is a selection of the moths most likely to be found, with a figure and description of each. Paper covered boards with coloured illustration of Emperor Moth among poppies, spine with title somewhat darkened. Off-setting from front and rear endpapers to page opposite, some minor spotting to frontispiece and title page, otherwise contents clean with no markings. Binding firm with slight crack at top and bottom of hinge. Covers have very little wear. A very good example of an early uncoloured copy. Size 12mo. E. Smith, T.W. Wood and W.S. Coleman (illustrator).

The book contains a preface, a sermon by the Rev George Johnstone tit…led The Incompleteness of Life (preached in Trinity Presbyterian Church, Prince's Park, 11th December 1898), an address at the Chapel of Toxteth Park, and a list of those present at the funeral. James Gordon Smith (1871-1898) was the only son of Liverpool MP and philanthropist Samuel Smith, who was associated with Liverpool charities such as the Mersey Mission to Seamen, Mrs.Birt's Sheltering Home, the YMCA etc, and was also a keen supporter of "social purity", attacking plays that he thought had displays of sexuality, or "glorification of the vulgarest debauchery" as he put it. Samuel erected and opened a building for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society and Bethel Union in 1900 as a memorial to mark the death of his son. It became the Gordon Smith Institute in Paradise Street, and was the headquarters for the Liverpool Seamen's Friend Society. Condition: Good condition. There is some marking to the cloth along the bottom edge, and some light spotted foxing to the prelims, but otherwise in good, solid condition.
