Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Englist text.; Paperback.; 18 x 25.5 cm.; 0.9 kg., 333 pages with black and white illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Exterior shows edges wear and minor wear marks on the front cover, spine and back cover. Wear mark at the middle right side of the back cover. Interior with pen written dedication on first page and library stamp on title page. Remaining interior looks as new.; The Empress of China was the first vessel belonging to the United States of America to initiate trade with the Chinese. Largely financed by Philadelphia merchants, but unable to sail from thence due to the freezing of the Delaware River, she departed New York Harbor for Canton on February 22, 1784 and returned in mid-May 1785 with a full lading of teas, silk, porcelain, and other exotic Oriental goods. Although historians have often repeated the general story of the Empress of China's trailblazing venture, this book details for the first time the financial tribulations, the human arrogance, and the outright deceit which at- tended the voyage and many of the people connected with it. For some, the ramifications endured throughout their lifetimes.

The author was on the Editorial advisory board American Neptune, A Quarterly Journal, since 1983. The first USS Essex of the United States Navy was a 36-gun [3] or 32-gun[4] sailing frigate that participated in the Quasi-War with France, the First Barbary War, and in the War of 1812. The British captured her in 1814 and she then served as HMS Essex. The frigate was built by Enos Briggs, Salem, Massachusetts, at a cost of $139,362 subscribed by the people of Salem and Essex County, to a design by William Hackett. Essex was armed with mostly short-range carronades that could not hope to match the range of 18- and 24-pounder naval guns. She was launched on 30 September 1799. On 17 December 1799 she was presented to the U. S. Navy and accepted by Captain Edward Preble. Herman Melville wrote about Essex in "Sketch Fifth" in The Encantadas, focusing on an incident off the Galápagos Islands with an elusive British ship. The story was first published in 1854 in Putnam's Magazine. Limited Edition (one of eleven hundred copies).
