Boards half bound with black leather to spine and corners and marbled paper to boards ; wear to spine caps, hinges, and corners, mild rubbing to paper. Text block has gilt top edge, marbled endpapers; cracked front hinges, owner label on front pastedowns, names and notes in ink on front endpapers, foxing to endpapers, first volumes with taped repair to page 279. Illustrated: "With all the wood engravings, plates, memoirs, and notes" title page. Probable date of publication, 1874, taken from Library of Congress bibliographic record. Three collections originally published separately. The first and second are reprinted from the editions of 1656 and 1658; the third combines the material of four editions, 1640, 1641, 1654, and 1663. They have been ascribed to Sir John Mennes and James Smith, but all three include the work of others.
