Exterior shows scuffing and soiling and exterior spine hinge has several chips and small tears at the front and rear boards edges and corners also show bumps and wear. This publication was originally finalized three volumes, each volume contains separate parts. This is only one of the books which is volume three, part one. The internal hinges are good at the boards but it is breaking loose at the second front end page. Paper is toned due to age and there is some light foxing and spotting present. The front pastedown and end page both have personal name stamps, one of which reads "Private Library J.B. Hanford" and the second (which is stamped twice) reads "From A. W. Smiley". No other markings or found in the book, no handwriting, no library stamps. This particular volume has the page numbering system starting at 1629 and ends at 2152 for total of 523 pages,

In its relatively brief (228 pages) , the author covers his time as an RAF Spitfire pilot from July 1944 to May 1945. He's included 16 pages of photos. As a member of 127 Squadron, Smith flew for the 2nd Tactical Air Force so a majority of his missions were air-to-ground sorties and as such, there is very little of the air-to-air action typical of most fighter pilot stories. He was able to gather many primary sources to ensure the accuracy and authenticity of his book: squadron reports, his pilot log book, personal notes from the time, a half-written novel penned a few years later, period letters from friends etc. ; 6.25 X 0.75 X 9.25 inches; 238 pages.
