Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The long career of a great soldierThis is the autobiography of Smith-Dorrien , one of the most notable British military figures of the mid-Victorian and Edwardian ages. The author's first experiences of military life were nearly his last and in this book we are given a vital and chilling account of what it was to be one of the few surviving officers to flee from the Zulu impis at Isandlwhana. Interesting service in Egypt, the Sudan, and the Boer War follows as Smith-Dorrien's career develops and he becomes a talented and highly regarded staff officer. His works during the opening campaigns of the Great War are now properly regarded as superb generalship which probably saved the army, but it also earned the enmity of French, his superior, who all but ended his career. A brilliant autobiography by a fine soldier who every reader will come to admire as a military man and a person with each turn of the page.

Smith-Dorrien held senior commands in the British Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He commanded II Corps at the Battle of Mons, the first major action fought by the BEF, and the Battle of Le Cateau, where he fought a vigorous and successful defensive action contrary to the wishes of the Commander-in-Chief Sir John French, with whom he had had a personality clash dating back some years. In the spring of 1915 he commanded the Second Army at the Second Battle of Ypres.

Charlotte 'Babs' Dorrien Smith, born in 1886, was one of seven children, 5 girls and 2 boys who grew up at Tresco Abbey in the Isles of Scilly. Their father was Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith who succeeded his uncle Augustus Smith as Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly in 1872. He married Edith Tower in 1875. A year after his marriage the SS Schiller was wrecked in the Isles of Scilly. William I, the German Emperor awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle and his wife a gold bracelet for their work with survivors. The author lists wrecks on the Isles of Scilly dating from 1636 to 1933, including an account of the wreck of the SS Schiller. In her introduction she points out that although there have been stories of deliberate wrecking, none of these have ever been authenticated and she goes on to say 'None would pretend, however, that the salvage from wrecks was anything but welcome and indeed was, and still can be, very profitable.' Type on page 5 faint in places, but still readable, several pencil underlinings in the text, short ink lines in the margin of page 23, rubbed at extremities, nicked at foot of spine, some speckled marks to covers. These reports were submitted to the Secretary of the War Office, at that time David Lloyd George, on 3 Aug and 17 Nov 1916, by a Committee chaired by Justice Clement Bailhache. The Committee was appointed to look into Government air policies in the wake of serious losses being sustained by the RFC during WW1. In particular, serious criticisms made by Pemberton Billing of "criminal negligence" and "official folly of those in high places" with claims against the Royal Aircraft Factory and RFC. Gathering information over several weeks looking at a series of specific cases, the Committee laid the blame with the military supply system rather than with air chiefs, calling for a joint Equipment Department, and closer cooperation with the Royal Naval Air Service.
