In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good dj. (price-clipped) [no significant wear to book, nice and clean but for one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase written in ink at top of the half-title pager; the jacket is only lightly edgeworn, but has a small patch at the bottom of the front panel where a previous owner has done some crude repair work and black-ink fill-in (it looks better to the naked eye than it appears in the scanned image)]. The third Lord Peter Wimsey mystery, originally published in 1927, in which the author's gentleman-detective looks into "the ostensibly natural death of elderly Agatha Dawson," and which involves "all the suspense, careful plotting, local color and first-rate detection" that one expects from a Lord Peter mystery. The amateur-detecting chronicle of Lord P.W. was comprised of eleven novels and 21 short stories, originally published between 1923 and 1940, and ceased abruptly when Ms. Sayers abandoned mystery fiction and turned her attention to religious writing. This edition was part of a multi-year project initiated by Harper & Brothers in the 1950s to bring all the Wimsey novels back into print, in the same order as they were originally published between 1923 and 1937, in an unstated "uniform edition" with an elegant dust jacket design (by Shirley Smith) incorporating the Wimsey family crest. The initial volume, "Whose Body?," was issued in January 1956, and at the pace of approximately two books a year the project wrapped up in early 1960 with the publication of the eleventh and final volume, "Busman's Honeymoon." Except for a handful of paperback printings of random titles, the Wimsey books had been out of print in the U.S. since the original series concluded, and it's generally acknowledged that the Harper reprint series had a lot to do with establishing Lord Peter firmly in the "great detectives" canon (no doubt aided, as such things often are, by the BBC-TV adaptations of five of the books, in multi-part productions between 1972 and 1975, and three more in 1987). To their credit, the publisher kept the series in print even after the merger and transition to Harper & Row in 1962; this volume (printed in 1974) still uses the original Smith jacket design, and will thus sit nicely on your shelf with other volumes of the series. A new set of hardcovers was issued in the mid-1980s, with attractively-illustrated dust jackets, and the books are widely available in paperback editions to this day (from Harper and other publishers). The original editions of the Wimsey books have become nearly impossible to find (and quite pricey if you do), and so the Harper reprints -- themselves now moderately scarce -- are a nice budget alternative for the collector. Illustrated by (dj design) Shirley Smith (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Good dj. First Edition Thus. [minimal wear to book, spine slightly turned, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief reading note (all in ink) on front endpaper; the jacket puts up a VG appearance, with some creasing and small closed tears, but a look at the verso reveals extensive tape-reinforcement along all edges and seams AND quite a bit of inked "touch-up" (of both the black and purple areas)]. The debut adventure of Lord Peter Wimsey, the author's enduringly popular gentleman-detective hero. In this book, Lord Peter is "about to set off for a rare book auction" when he's informed by his mother than an acquaintance of hers, "a respectable little man," had discovered a dead body in his bath, and wouldn't Lord Peter be kind enough to pop over to the gent's house in Battersea and "ask if there's anything we can do." Thus begins the amateur-detecting chronicle of Lord P.W., which continued through eleven novels and 21 short stories originally published between 1923 and 1940, before ceasing abruptly when Ms. Sayers abandoned mystery fiction and turned her attention to religious writing. This edition was part of a multi-year project initiated by Harper & Brothers in the 1950s to bring all the Wimsey mysteries back into print, in the same order as they were originally published between 1923 and 1937, in an unstated "uniform edition" with an elegant dust jacket design (by Shirley Smith) incorporating the Wimsey family crest.
