Softcover. First Edition. Octavo, 141 pages; VG-; in beige wraps, black titling to spine; mild wear to spine and extremities; small bookseller sticker to interior of front wrap; shelved case 1. "From 1973 to 1980, a group of African American artists in New York City published The Black Photographers Annual. The idea emerged from… the collective of African American photographers known as the Kamoinge Workshop (Kamoinge, from the Kikuyu language of Kenya, means "to work together"). The forty-nine artists featured in the book, however, far exceeded the boundaries of the collective. In her preface for the Annual novelist Toni Morrison wrote, "It was conceived as a commitment to the community of Black artists," while writer and activist Clayton Riley described the Annual as a defining moment in black culture." [Virginia Museum of Fine Arts]. 1362103. Shelved Dupont Bookstore. B/W Photographs (illustrator).

Unbound. Zustand: Fine. Silver gelatin photograph. Image measures 6¾" x 9½", laid down to a board measuring 11" x 14". The photograph, taken by noted Black photographer Beuford Smith, depicts a woman and two shadowy figures on a moody beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, dated on the verso November, 1970. The verso also states "Pub…lished by: [James] Van Der Zee Institute, Date: 1973," and also seems to indicate that it was given as a gift to "Studio Museum, Date: Oct. 1972." The image and recto of card are in fine condition, the verso of the card with a bit of rubbing and soiling in the corners, from framing. Beuford Smith was the founder of the Cesaire Photo Agency and the Black Photographers Annual. Known for his depictions of Black life in the 1960's and 70's, Smith received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 1990 and 2000, a Light Work Artist-in-Residence Fellowship in 1999, and an Aaron Siskind Foundation Fellowship in 1998. From the collection of photographer Vance Allen, James Van Der Zee's assistant and the director of the Van Der Zee Institute.
