First edition in pamphlet form, in which the feminist and suffragist argues for women's equal rights to education, employment opportunities, and financial independence: "One great corresponding cry rises from a suffering multitude of women, saying 'We want work'" (p. 6). It first appeared in the feminist periodical, the Waverley Journal, in the same year. In May 1857, Bodichon (1827-1891) provided the funding for the feminist campaigner Bessie Rayner Parkes to take over the editorship of the Waverley Journal. However, when their attempt to buy the journal outright failed, she funded the founding of a new periodical, the English Woman's Journal. It was from this publication that the Langham Place Group stemmed, and in 1866 several members, including Bodichon, led the first campaign for women's suffrage. Bodichon also co-founded the Society for the Promotion of Employment for Women in the same year as this pamphlet. Octavo (190 x 125 mm). Disbound.
