Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt lettering to front and spine. Top edge gilt, fore-edge untrimmed. Contents very bright with no foxing to plates and all tissue-guards intact. A super copy of a novel first published in sixteen parts by Richard Bentley, 1846-47, with each part in wrappers with a wood engraving by Thomas Cilks. Smith born at Chertsey, Surrey. He studied medicine in Paris, and his first literary effort was an account of his life there. He gradually relinquished his medical work for light literature, though more a journalist rather than a literary man, he was one of the most popular humorous authors of his time, one of the early contributors to 'Punch' and 'Bentley's Miscellany'. First Edition. Damage to spine which is split with the top half detached (kept with the book) and the lower half detached at the rear, minor wear to boards, internally pages clean with some slight tanning, boards and nearby pages foxed and damp-stained, other illustrations nice and clear, fair condition. Half calf and marbled paper, gilt decoration and title on spine. Octavo, 15 x 13 cm. Hardback.
