In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. in a striking contemporary binding of half pale calf over marbled boards, the boards slightly rubbed, spines gilt in compartments with two red morocco labels on each spine, lettered and numbered in gilt, endpapers and edges marbled in brown and blue, with the booksellers ticket of Poole and Harding, Chester and the later contemporary ownership inscription of ?Hugill? Three volumes (187 x 113 mm), 8vo (195 x 115 mm), pp. viii, 340, [ii], 369; [ii], 392; half-title present in the first volume only, A very handsome copy of the first edition of one of Horace Smith?s popular historical novels. In 1812, after the rebuilding of the Drury Lane Theatre, the managers offered a prize of £50 for an address to be recited at the opening. Together with his elder brother James, Horace wrote parodies of poets of the day which were then published as supposedly failed entries for the competition. Horace?s own entries included parodies of Byron, Moore, Scott and Bowles while James parodied Wordsworth, Southey, Coleridge and Crabbe. The resultant Rejected Addresses, which was published in 1812, was hugely popular and is still acclaimed as one of the most brilliant parodies of English poets. Smith enjoyed a wide circle of friendships, most particularly including Leigh Hunt and Shelley, with whom he entered numerous poetry competitions; he also helped Shelley to manage his finances. In 1818, Smith took part with Shelley in a sonnet-writing competition on the subject of the Nile River, inspired by Diodorus Siculus and submitted to The Examiner. Both poets wrote sonnets called ?Ozymandias?: Shelley?s was published on 11th January 1818 under the pseudonym Glirastes and Smith?s was published on 1st February 1818 under the initials H.S. Smith later renamed his sonnet ?On a Stupendous Leg of Granite, Discovered Standing by Itself in the Deserts of Egypt, with the Inscription Inserted Below? and it was published in his collection Amarynthus. Shelley?s sonnet is well known to all but here for fun we reproduce Horace Smith?s: ?In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone, Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws The only shadow that the Desert knows. "I am great Ozymandias," saith the stone, "The King of kings: this mighty city shows The wonders of my hand." The city's gone! Naught but the leg remaining to disclose The sight of that forgotten Babylon. We wonder, and some hunter may express Wonder like ours, when through the wilderness Where London stood, holding the wolf in chase, He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess What wonderful, but unrecorded, race Once dwelt in that annihilated place.? Alongside his literary output, which included poetry and several novels strongly influenced by Walter Scott, Horace Smith was a stockbroker. Shelley said of him: ?Is it not odd that the only truly generous person I ever knew who had money enough to be generous with should be a stockbroker? He writes poetry and pastoral dramas and yet knows how to make money, and does make it, and is still generous? Sadleir, XIX Century Fiction, 3107; not in Wolff, who lists most of his other novels.

In den Warenkorb2pp, 12mo. On bifolium. Twenty lines of text. In fair condition, aged and worn, with chipping and short closed tears to extremities. Folded twice. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Joseph Blunt Esqre.' Signature underlined with a flourish. The letter begins: 'Here I am again installed in my Study, & as I am sending a parcel to town I beg to thank you for your hospitality, & to tell you that they are all here quite delighted with your little remembrances, except that my wife says she does not quite like your making me a present of a pair of horns!' For his part he feels that the gift 'affords a good handle', and looks upon it 'as an assistance to boot'. He concludes 'I shall tell every body that you shot the Chamois & indeed I understand from Hill that you shot 34, & wounded 19 - he happens to know it.' It is not to be thought that Smith is actually thanking Blunt for cuckolding him: the joke is that Blunt has been hunting and has sent Smith a trophy. 'Hill' is Thomas Hill 'the Drysalter', owner of the Monthly Mirror, around whom a literary circle, including Theodore Hook and Thomas Campbell, assembled.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry, and those of his brother and the recipient, in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 4to. Bifolium. The letter had been torn in half, with loss of a strip of paper from the second leaf, resulting in damage to a couple of words from the valediction; it has been carefully repaired with archival tape, and is otherwise in fair condition, lightly aged, with slight fading of the ink on the first page. The large signature 'James Smith' is clear and undamaged. Addressed to 'J. W. Croker Esq'. An interesting letter, casting light on the workings of the Georgian civil service. At the time of writing Croker was Secretary to the Admiralty. The first paragraph reads: 'My dear Croker / The Appointment of Sir Giffin Wilson to a Mastership in Chancery has occasioned a Vacancy in the Office of Solicitor to the Board of Ordnance: so called although its duties are those of a Barrister. Sargeant Adair hed that office formerly and it was the custom of the Board, up to his period, to obtain the Reports of the Solicitor, as their Counsel, through the information of their Assistant Solicitor. My father was at this Time the Assistant Solicitor: and from the difficulty of obtaining the Sergeants Reports in Time, the Board adopted the Practice of being content with those of my father, as their Assistant Solicitor: afterwards of my father & self as joint Assistant Solicitors, and now of myself singly. This practice has prevailed for upwards of thirty years.' In the second half of the letter he continues his explanation of the various situations of solicitor and assistant solicitor, before asking Croker if he could use his influence to push for a merger of the two posts: 'I need not say that I should feel gratified and obliged.' His father failed in a similar application twenty-five years before, as a member of parliament had to hold the office of solicitor. 'Latterly, however, you are aware that Sir G. Wilson was not in Parliament.' It is not clear whether Croker intervened, or whether Smith's application was went any further.

Good. Professionally restored and relined on fresh linen. Some discolorations. Comes with newly made binder. Size 39 x 78.5 Inches. This is a large-scale 1849 Peter W. Sheafer and Robert P. Smith map of northeastern Pennsylvania illustrating the peak of the Anthracite Coal Boom - one of the driving factors of American industrial development in the 19th century. A Closer Look This 1849 map is based on an earlier 1836 map published by Fischer and the firm of J. F. and C. A. Watson - upon which it expands and elaborates. Centered on Pottsville and oriented slightly to the northwest, coverage embraces a broad swath of northeastern Pennsylvania, comprising the primary coal-producing regions: Schuylkill, Carbon, Luzerne, Columbia, Northumberland, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. The large scale allows for the detailed illustration of individual mountains, estates, coal company lands, railroads, small streams, and town grids. There is an inset of Pottsville - Pennsylvania's Coal Capital - and the regional rail hub. (Incidentally, Pottsville is where the Irish laborer secret society, the Molly Maguires, battled against unfair labor practices in the 1870s.) Another inset focuses on Orwigsburg, the Schuylkill County Seat when this map was made and until 1851, when it moved to Pottsville. A third inset details post towns and routes around Pottsville. A fourth, in the upper right, illustrates railway connections with major industrial hubs, including New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. An engraved vignette illustrates Mauch Chunk, today's Jim Thorpe. Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Boom The Pennsylvania anthracite coal boom in the 19th century marked a transformative period in the state's economic, social, and environmental history. Anthracite, a hard coal known for its high energy content and low impurities, became highly sought after as a fuel source during the Industrial Revolution. This coal, found primarily in northeastern Pennsylvania, was uniquely suited for industrial processes and home heating without the heavy smoke common to other coal types. As demand skyrocketed, towns sprang up around mines, drawing thousands in search of employment. The industry catalyzed the construction of extensive rail networks, facilitating the transport of coal to major cities and ports. However, with the boom came significant challenges: mining led to environmental degradation, miners worked in dangerous conditions for meager wages, and tensions between labor and management frequently erupted in strikes and violence. Despite its challenges, the anthracite coal boom was a linchpin in America's industrial ascent. Publication History and Census The map was compiled by Samuel B. Fisher and P. W. Sheafer. It was published in 1849 in Philadelphia by Robert Pearsall Smith. This map is rare. We note examples only at the New York Public Library and the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. No history on the market. References: OCLC 46794663. New York Public Library, Map Div. 01-1948.
