(leaves foxed). Original dark brown cloth (edges bumped, spine head chipped); a very good solid copy. This early tour guide follows both rail and river rout…es, primarily from the mouth of the Saguenay to Niagara. Most of the hunting and fishing advice is found in the flow of his tour narrative, except for a list of salmon and trout rivers "below Quebec", which gives 22 rivers and two stretches of the St. Lawrence. William Notman's photographs, include five views (Montmorenci Steps and Falls, Niagara Falls, Montreal Harbor, Ottawa's new parliament building) and five scenes and genre characters from paintings (three by "Krieghoff" and two others, possibly his; Cornelius Krieghoff, 1815-1872, was a Dutch-born Canadian genre painter, popular in his day and still appreciated for his record of the era). Appendices list mammals and birds.

[4], 66, [2ads]pp. Montreal, Dawson Brothers, "Canada's forest wealth has been one of the great instruments in her progress, and it is with the object of more fully drawing public attention to this source of wealth, that… the foregoing pages have been written." A scarce work by Canadian naturalist Henry Beaumont Small (1832-1919). This attractive pamphlet gives detailed statistics on the productivity of timber industries in different forest regions, with much data on biodiversity. The majority of the text is concerned with classifying and describing the trees found in each province, with information on their various uses. There are also sections on cattle, forest fires, parasites, maple sugar, sumac, and paper making. British born Small emigrated to Canada in the 1850s, and after a brief stint serving in the US Sanitary Commission in Virginia during the American Civil War, he joined the Canadian civil service in the Marine and Fisheries, and subsequently Agriculture Departments. He wrote many works on natural history, his most famous being The Canadian Handbook and Tourist's Guide (1866). This publication is rare.
