Erstausgabe
Two volumes. Large 8vo. xii, 478; vii, [1], 459 pp. 32 chromolithographic plates (including 2 frontispieces); foxed endpapers, closed marginal tears at vol. I, pp. 13-16; vol. II, pp. 233-240 top corner chipped. Original gilt stamped maroon cloth; faded, corners slightly bumped. Very good. First edition of this beautifully illustrated account of India. Sir William Henry Sleeman (1788-1856) was a British soldier and administrator in India. In 1809, he joined the Bengal Army and served in the Nepal War (1814-1816) and along with many in his regiment was struck down by jungle fever. His future as a result was confined to political and administrative posts in which he excelled, particularly in the suppression of the Thuggi ["Thugs"]. ("The Thuggee and Dacoity Suppression Acts, 1836âÂÂ"1848 in British India under East India Company rule were a series of legal acts that outlawed thugeeâÂÂ"a practice in North and Central India involving robbery and ritualized murder and mutilation on highwaysâÂÂ"and dacoity, a form of banditry prevalent in the same region, and prescribed punishment for the same.") Sleeman wrote of the murderous atrocities of the Thuggi and he advocated their suppression by a "major and coordinated assault." - Dirks (p. 306). This book influenced BritainâÂÂs occupation of India, partly justified in their minds because they attributed Hinduism to IndiaâÂÂs problems "and that the British rule could help good triumph over evil." (p. 307). In 1820 became assistant to the Governor-GeneralâÂÂs agent in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories. This volumes record the many stories, including (vol. I): the ghost story of the Men-Tigers, (p. 161), witchcraft, (p.89), epidemic diseases (p. 209), haunted villages (p. 285), suicide (p. 328), the great diamond of Kohinoor (p. 473); (vol. II); application of electricity to agriculture (p.25), "inability of Europeans to speak Eastern languages" (p. 51), the murder of William Fraser (p. 209), Delhi (p.245), Indian police (p.313), Sleeman was also the earliest discoverer of dinosaur fossils in Asia. Abbey, 466 (plates order varies from Abbey copy); Nicholas B Dirks, The Scandal of Empire: India and the creation of imperial . . . - 2009, p. 306.
