Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - An epic first hand account of high adventure The Victorian age was notable for the appearance of gentleman soldiers of fortune in the imperial world and there could be no more exotic and exceptional example of that than the author of this book, Rudolf Slatin. The son of a Viennese merchant, he went to Egypt to work as a bookseller's assistant in Cairo in the early 1870s. He travelled extensively through Egypt and the Sudan and made the acquaintance of the remarkable general, Charles Gordon. After a period of Austrian military service, Slatin returned to Africa at Gordon's invitation. He arrived in early 1879 and after a meteoric rise in career fortunes he secured, in 1881, the governor-generalship of Darfur with the rank of 'bey.' He then engaged in an extended war with the Mahdists, with considerable initial success, but after the annihilation of Hicks Pasha's force eventually surrendered to Mahdists in 1883. Slatin, who had converted to Islam, was taken to the now besieged Khartoum to induce Gordon to capitulate. This failed and the city and country fell, Gordon's severed head was displayed before him and Slatin entered into a period of eleven years captivity in the hands of the Khalifa. He was treated cruelly and indulgently by turns-sometimes employed upon essential services, sometimes a prisoner in the literal sense. In 1895, he eventually escaped and reached Aswan in Egypt after a perilous, 1,000 km journey across the desert. Slatin was appointed 'Pasha' by the Khedive and a host of honours were heaped upon him by the British and others. Subsequently he rejoined the Egyptian Army and was present for the final defeat of the Mahdists at Omdurman. This book, written by Slatin immediately after his escape, is a remarkable account of endurance and fortitude and provides us with a unique insight into events rarely reported by European witnesses. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.…

In den WarenkorbThick 8vo. (24 x 15 cm). pp.xviii+[i]+636. Publisher's original maroon cloth, pictorial gilt block on front cover, spine lettered in gilt, blue-coated endpapers, top edge gilt. Portrait frontispiece, 21 plates, 2 folding maps. Some light rubbing to exterior along edges, corners a bit bruised, some occasional light spotting, textblock tight and square, generally very good. The fourth edition, or issue, published the same year as the first edition. Slatin's book provides a detailed first-hand account of his time as a high-ranking official and later a prisoner in Sudan during the tumultuous Mahdist War (18811899), a major religious and anti-colonial uprising in Sudan against the Khedivate of Egypt and later the British Empire. "Slatin's career in the Sudan covered thirty-six eventful years. He started in January 1879 in the finance department as an inspector with the rank of a bimbashi (the Turkish equivalent of a major). Later that year he was appointed governor of Dara, in south-western Darfur, and after less than a year became governor-general of the whole province. In his major publication Fire and Sword in the Sudan (1896) Slatin was vague about his duties in Darfur. However, his life as governor-general was soon disrupted by Muhammad Ahmad ibn 'Abdullahi, who in June 1881 declared himself the Mahdi of the Sudan. Soon the Mahdi and his followers (ansar) escaped from Aba Island, on the White Nile, to the Nuba Mountains and Slatin became actively involved in the uprising. Fire and Sword in the Sudan was published in English in 1896 and was dedicated to Queen Victoria. Its impact on public opinion in Europe was greater than Wingate had expected. It appeared in numerous editions until 1935, and was translated into German, Italian, French, and Arabic" (ODNB).…

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. A bright and superior fourth edition copy of this popular bestselling memoir by the Anglo-Austrian soldier and administrator Rudolf Carl von Slatin on his time in the Sudan. An unusually smart copy of this work, in it's original binding. The fourth edition of this work, published the same year as the first edition. Slatin was encouraged by Sir Terry Waite to write his memoirs. The work became a best-seller which is why it went through so many editions in its first year. It was written months after his escape. To the preface Slatin notes 'during my captivity I was unable to make and notes or keep any diaries' therefore this work has been produced on his memory alone. Slatin was an administrator in the Sudan who was arrested following the surrender of Dara and the Mahdist capture of el Obeid. He was taken, as a prisoner, to induce the Governor of General Sudan Charles George Gordon to surrender. This failed and Slatin was incarcerated until his eventual escape. With thirty-two pages of advertisements to the rear, as called for. With a frontispiece, twenty-one plates, one folding plan and one folding map. Collated, complete. This work is in chronological order of von Slatin's time in the Sudan. There are chapters on the rule of Khalifa Abdullahi, the Mahdist occupation, discent and discord, his plans for escape following incarceration and his eventual fleeing. A truly gripping account, and a fascinating insight into the politics of Sudan at this time. In the publisher's original binding. Externally, very smart with just some light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Spine has faded ever so slightly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just occasional light scattered spots to pages. Very Good Indeed. R Talbot Kelly (illustrator). book.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good or better. First edition. Large 8vo. [7], viii-xviii, [2], 636, [2] pp. Green cloth with gold lettering and rules on the spine, a decoration in gold of Slatin escaping from Sudan on a camel on the front board; top edge gilt. Illustrated with a frontispiece photogravure of Rudolf C. Slatin, a color fold-out map in the rear showing Mahdist control over the region in 1895, a color fold-out plan of Khartoum, and 21 black and white plates illustrating scenes from Slatin's time as governor of Sudan, and subsequent capture and imprisonment at the hands of the Mahdists. Oxford DNB, "Slatin, Sir Rudolf Carl von". Pasha Slatin began his career in Sudan as governor of Dara, in south-western Darfur. Less than a year later he would go on to become governor-general of the whole province. In 1881, Muhammad Ahmad ibn 'Abdullahi declared himself the Mahdi of the Sudan, and with his followers escaped from Aba Island on the White Nile to the Nuba Mountains. Slatin led his troops against the uprising, a quasi civil war, as numerous tribal and religious leaders in Darfur joined the Mahdi. In early 1883 the Mahdi took al-'Ubayd, capital of Kordofan, and Darfur was cut off from Khartoum. To make a last bid at defeating the uprising, Slatin converted to Islam to increase the loyalty of his troops. In 1896, Slatin's publication of this book proved extremely influential at stirring British sentiment to recapture Sudan. After this book was released, Slatin was something of a celebrity in Great Britain. He was a correspondent and friend to the Queen, visiting frequently at Windsor and Balmoral. In 1898 he was awarded a knighthood from Queen Victoria, and would go on to serve in Sudan from 1906 until 1914 and the outbreak of World War One. An important record of British imperialism in the nineteenth-century, at the height of Queen Victoria's empire. A trace or two of wear to the extremities and a discreet tape repair to the map, leaves and plates are clean and free of foxing.…
