Hardcover. Zustand: New. Few other Hindu gods guide a regional consciousness, pervade walks of everyday life and define a collective psyche the way Lord Jagannath does in Odisha and its contiguous areas. Jagannath is metonymic of Odisha and the Odia way of life, arguably much more than any other god for a particular geography or its peoples. While not derecognising the historical and the spiritual aspects of Jagannath, Bonding with the Lord attempts to look at the deployment of Jagannath in contemporary cultural practices involving the sensorium in the widest sense. The project of a cultural Jagannath not only materialises him in people's everyday practices but also democratises scholarship on him. The expansion of the scope of research on Jagannath to cultural expressions in a more encompassing way rather than confining to 'elitist' religious/literary sources makes him an everyday presence and significantly enhances his sphere of influence. Jagannath's 'tribal' origin, his association with Buddhism and Jainism and his avatari status make him an all-encompassing, multilayered symbol and a treasure trove for multiple interpretations.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Studies of Odisha have often been simplistic and condensed to notions of a relatively prosperous, urbanized centre in the plain along the sea vis-à-vis a backward 'hinterland'. Due to such notions of othering, Odisha beyond the coastal world-the largely Adivasi-populated highlands and ostensible backyard areas in coastal perspectives-has often been relegated to the background of both scholarly and popular imagination. Highland Odisha inverts such othering to draw attention to the highlands of Odisha in the west and south. It is based on fieldwork, participant observation, oral traditions, archival materials, and long-term historical and anthropological research by a range of scholars negotiating this region and its people. Significantly, while examining the less visible and often misrecognized highlands of Odisha, it questions dominant, coastal-centric views and acknowledges a multitude of perspectives on Odisha beyond any simplified dichotomy. This collection of nine essays covers a range of themes, including social structures, patterns of kinship and relatedness; concepts of food, music or death and their significance related to wider cosmologies; interdependencies among highland communities and the position of migrant farmers between caste and Adivasi society; and processes of resistance and ideas around Nehruvian industrialization projects set up in the supposed 'wilderness'.

Bansabali of Bonai Raifamily (English translation). 3. Bansabali of Bonai Raifamily (Oriya Text). 4. Kadamba gatha by Rajpurohit Gopinatha Mishra (English Translation) 5. Kadamba Gatha by Rajpurohit Gopinatha Mishra Original Oriya text. 6. Kadamba Gatha by Madan Mohan Mishra. 7. Kadamba Gatha: synopsis by Surendranath Mishra. 8. Chapter XIV of Kadamba Gatha by Surendranath Mishra. Whoever visits the former kingdom of Bonai now a sub-division of Sundargarh district in North-Western Orissa, and its capital and headquarter Bonaigarh, can hardly fail to notice roads jammed with trucks and dumpers over loaded with ore. The area close to the borders of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, is rich in minerals. Iron ore has been supplied to the Rourkela Steel Plant for decades, but only in the wake of the most recent industrialization the valley has been dotted with sponge iron factories. Looking at these new chimneys, one easily pass and overlook the former fort garh with the palace located slightly away from the busy main road with court high school, bus stop and market. Venturing into the history of Bonai one encounters a variety of texts assembled for the first time in this volume. These chronicles have been produced, modified re-compiled or perhaps even fabricated under specific historic circumstances-stimulated by internal and external factors. They record power configurations as well as family histories. Like Puranic genealogies as discussed by Romila Thapar, they may not be faithful records of the past but rather memories of social relations. (jacket).
